The first complete Bike Map of Boston is ready to be unveiled. And the city wants your feedback.

Click here to see the first complete bike map of Boston. The catch is that you can’t yet find this map in print. That’s because the city wants your feedback in order to make their bike map the best possible bike map for your needs.

This map is a compilation of what you in the community told the city are the best biking roads in Boston. It is therefore only fitting that they want you to tell them what needs to be changed or updated. So please, send them your feedback

Boston Now Accepting Applications For Bike Friendly Business

The city of Boston is now accepting applications for Bike Friendly Businesses. Applications due February 13, 2009.

Mayor Menino and the City of Boston invite businesses and organizations to apply to become part of the Boston Bike Friendly Business program.

The Bicycle Friendly Business Program recognizes Boston businesses and organizations that engage in bicycle friendly practices in order to encourage bicycling among their employees. The application process is simple and straightforward – we provide a checklist of simple practices that make it easy to encourage cycling. Applicants indicate which practices they are currently implementing, as well as those practices that they are willing to commit to for the upcoming year.

Applications are due by February 13, 2009.

An accomplished public official, economist and administrator, Enrique Peñalosa completed his three-year term as Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia on December 31, 2000. While mayor, Peñalosa was responsible for numerous radical improvements to the city and its citizens. He promoted a city model giving priority to children and public spaces and restricting private car use, building hundreds of kilometers of sidewalks, bicycle paths, pedestrian streets, greenways, and parks. After organizing a Car-Free Day in 2000, he was awarded the Stockholm Challenge Award and rewarded by a referendum vote endorsing an annual car-free day. Peñalosa also led efforts to improve Bogotá’s marginal neighborhoods through citizen involvement; planted more than 100,000 trees; created a new, highly successful bus-based transit system; and turned a deteriorated downtown avenue into a dynamic pedestrian public space. He helped transform the city’s attitude from one of negative hopelessness to one of pride and hope, developing a model for urban improvement based on the equal rights of all people to transportation, education, and public spaces.

This event is part of a 4-day series of events sponsored by Livable Streets Alliance and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, in collaboration with WalkBoston, Institute for Human Centered Design, Bikes Not Bombs, Charles River Conservancy, MassBike.
