Go Tell The City What You Think Of Their New Bike Map

Written by Boston Biker on Jan 21

The first complete Bike Map of Boston is ready to be unveiled. And the city wants your feedback.

Click here to see the first complete bike map of Boston. The catch is that you can’t yet find this map in print. That’s because the city wants your feedback in order to make their bike map the best possible bike map for your needs.

This map is a compilation of what you in the community told the city are the best biking roads in Boston. It is therefore only fitting that they want you to tell them what needs to be changed or updated. So please, send them your feedback

The map looks great, and very handy. But I’m not sure what the beginner, intermediate, and advanced ratings mean.

For instance, North Harvard Street is my least favorite street to bike down. The cars can barely fit and the street looks like it’s hit by meteorites. It’s rated intermediate, while Broadway in Southie is advanced. I’d probably switch those ratings.

Is this an index of how busy the street is? Are you taking into account bike lanes?

This map would be more helpful to me if I knew what “advanced” meant. I’ve been biking for a few years, and I don’t mind a little weaving and dodging. Does this qualify me as advanced?

That’s it! Thanks for the map!

This is definitely a step in the right direction for the City, but I wish it would at least match the comprehensiveness of the Rubel map, which this falls very short of.

For something really impressive, check out the free, official bike maps from Seattle and Portland. They double as a street atlas, and Portland has separate neighborhood maps. Of course, before you can draw up a nice useful bikemap of the city, it helps to create bike-friendly roads as those two cities have done.

Interesting, there are some streets in my neighborhood that are rated ‘Beginner’ and they are the streets I see most fixies being walked up because it’s so steep.
