The Town of Brookline, an urban/suburban community of 60,000 located abutting the City of Boston, is seeking candidates for an internship to work on launching the Town’s portion of the regional bicycle sharing system. The position will be approximately 10 hours a week, from April until August 2012.

Specific responsibilities may include:
• Working with local businesses to develop a system for Hubway users to easily access bicycle helmets
• Working with stakeholders to plan for launch events for the system
• Solicit contributions from local businesses to fund launch events and ongoing operations of Hubway in Brookline
• Working with the vendor to finalize station sites and coordinating installation of up to four Hubway stations in Brookline
• Refining financial model for the Hubway system in Brookline and assist in grant reporting and other fiscal responsibilities
• Attend Hubway regional meetings when appropriate
• Other responsibilities as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills and be able to read plans and interpret basic local, state and federal regulations; should be good with the public and able to clearly articulate complex concepts in accessible terms; and will have strong report writing skills. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in urban planning or a related field, with some Master’s level course work completed. Compensation depends on qualifications.

Brookline Getting Hubway This Summer

Brookline selectmen have voted to join the Hubway regional bicycle sharing network, but local cyclists may have to wait until this summer before the rubber will hit the road.

Selectmen voted to join the regional partnership Tuesday, but the town still has to hammer out a few more details on the contract with Oregon-based Alta Bicycle Share to manage the program, said Jeff Levine, Brookline’s director of planning and community development.

Levine said he’s hoping to have the contract finalized within the next couple of weeks, but once the town orders its bicycle docking stations, it could be up to 16 weeks before the stations will be received.

The docking stations will be located in Brookline Village, at Town Hall and in Coolidge Corner and Levine said he’s hoping it won’t take the full 16 weeks before the stations can be installed. (via)

Hubway To Expand Next Year

Seems the Hubway sharing program was so successful, that Cambridge, Brookline, and Somerville are getting stations next year.

Woo! And this after everyone thought the streets would run red with the blood of a thousand dead hubway cyclists…seems that Boston city streets are not too rough and tumble for cyclists after all. We have a long way to go…but we are heading in the right direction.

After recording 140,000 trips in four months, Boston’s European-style bicycle-sharing system is expanding across the Charles River, with stations planned for Cambridge and Somerville after a winter hiatus.

The 60-station, 600-bike Hubway system will shut down Wednesday night and reopen in March, weather permitting, when it will quickly expand – adding 30 stations and roughly 300 bicycles beyond Boston’s borders.

Cambridge officials said they hope to concentrate 20 stations in the most densely populated swaths of their city, and Somerville expects to usher in eight stations.

Back on the Boston side of the Charles, Brookline is working on two stations it hopes to open soon after the Cambridge and Somerville expansion.

“The number one question I get in my office overall is, ‘When is Hubway coming to Brookline?’ ’’ said Jeff Levine, director of planning and community development in Brookline, which intends to introduce stations at Coolidge Corner and Brookline Village.(via)

Ghost Bike Removed?

Got this in the email today.

The ghost bike installed on Longwood Avenue, Brookline for Tracy Milillo was removed by the police on December 30th,2010 because of complaints by some residents of the Town. It is currently being held by the Brookline police. May Tracy rest in peace. My condolences to her friends & family.
