Cambridge Gets Another Bicycle Stop Light
Written by Boston Biker on Jun 23It took the Dutch 30 or so years to get their bicycle infrastructure to the point it is today. Lucky for us they did all the hard work and we can just copy the good stuff and catch up fast. Cambridge has been at the forefront of copying good ideas from other places. Case in point their new bike stop light.
In recent weeks, a new traffic signal has appeared on Cambridge’s Western Avenue, between Massachusetts Avenue and Memorial Drive, to accompany the new separated cycle track recently finished in a round of construction. (via)
I can’t really recommend the article, as its atrocious, but you know its the Globe. I for one welcome our new cycle track/bike signal overlords. You can see two other bike lights in Harvard sq, and Porter Square.

Connecting Historic Boston With A Bike Path: Make Your Voice Heard!
Written by Boston Biker on Nov 14Imagine a giant figure 8 loop around the downtown core of the city of dedicated car free cycle tracks for cyclists.
I really like this idea, I think it has potential as not only a way to see all the historic sights in Boston, but also as a downtown Bike Freeway system. Providing a way to get around the core of the city (and beyond) on a high capacity dedicated bike way.
Most importantly it can be used as an foundation to build future infrastructure from. Check out this meeting and attend to support this great idea!

Crucial meeting: Support a cycletrack on Causeway St!
The Connect Historic Boston Bike Trail is a proposal for “a family-friendly bicycle loop around downtown Boston.” To make Causeway Street family-friendly will require a physically separate bike lane (a.k.a. cycletrack) for bikes, and new improvements for pedestrians. The Boston Cyclists Union, LivableStreets Alliance, MassBike and WalkBoston invite you to show up and speak up at a meeting presenting a new plan for Causeway Street — a crucial link the proposed Connect Historic Boston Bike Trail downtown.

Smart Kids At Northeastern Making The City Better For Cyclists
Written by Boston Biker on Apr 21I went to this last year, it was fascinating and filled me with hope that it is not only possible to build a great bike infrastructure but that there are smart people out there doing the planning for it.

Friends of Northeastern University’s Transportation Engineering program:
You are invited to the final presentations of the Class of 2009 senior design projects in transportation engineering, to be held Wednesday April 22, 6:30 pm, in 108 Snell Engineering Center. The students will present designs for four outstanding bikeways:
– a cycle track (separated bike path) along Boylston Street from Fenway to the Public Garden, and all the way around the Public Garden
– a cycle track parallel to the Harbor Commercial Street in the North End to Kneeland Street in Chinatown
– a cycle track from Melnea Cass Blvd. to UMass, via Southampton, Preble, Old Colony, and Morrissey Blvd (right past the Globe)
– a greenway along Lee / Clyde Streets in Brookline for walking and bicycling
Each design demonstrates the feasibility of “road diets” that make it possible to make roadways narrower, providing the space needed for traffic-separated bike paths — exactly what Boston most needs to promote bicycling and bicycle safety.
