There Is No Good Way To Be Hit By A Car…

Written by Boston Biker on Mar 19

But if for some insane reason, you absolutely must be hit by a car, make it like this.

I can’t get over how this mattress soars off this truck, knocks the bike out from under this guy and then he just lands on the mattress…amazing.

Dear drivers, slow down, and tie your bed down better.

Hubway To Reopen Soon

Written by Boston Biker on Mar 17

Got this from Hubway, looks like they will all be back soon!

——————

SPRING IS ON ITS WAY! Hubway’s full system reopening soon.
More daylight hours. Freak snowstorms. Hubway stations reappearing in Boston, Brookline, and Somerville. Two out of three of these are sure signs that spring is on the way. You may have noticed the arrival of some stations in your neighborhood over the last few days, and there are more to come in the next few weeks. We are looking forward to the system-wide reopening of Hubway very soon.

We will be sure to let you know when you will be able to Hubway across the entire network, but until then, continue to ride on in Cambridge! Please note that only Cambridge stations are operational at this time. Other stations will not accept bicycles until they are fully connected. Stay tuned to the Hubway website for the latest information, and check the Spotcycle app for available stations. If you have any questions about station availability, you can call customer service at 855-4HUBWAY (448-2929).

Spring will be here soon. Get ready to ride.

DATA NERDS: REJOICE! 2013 Comprehensive Hubway Trip Data Released

Ever want to know which Hubway stations are the most popular? How long it takes to ride from South Station to Brookline Village? Or how many people take out bikes in the middle of the night? And where the heck are they going at that hour anyway?!?

Well, if you’re feeling creative, nerdy, or just downright curious, and want to play around with how Hubway trip data can provide a window into major travel patterns in metro-Boston, visit the Hubway Data Challenge page today! In February, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), in partnership with Hubway, the Cities of Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville, and the Town of Brookline, released new and comprehensive trip data.

In addition to the Data Visualizations submitted at the end of the 2012 season, you’ll have access to all sorts of data, including:

  • Duration of trips.
  • Trip start & end stations, dates, and times.
  • Individual Bike ID numbers.
  • Member Type (Annual, Monthly, Casual).
  • General member demographic info.
Find everything you’d want (and then some) for all Hubway rides through November 2013, packed into a tidy, downloadable 17 MB CSV. You can also register for direct access to the MAPC’s Data API. What breakthrough idea will you come up with?
WE LOVE BIKES. WE LOVE FLOWERS. WHO DOESN’T?

The Boston Flower & Garden Show is big, exciting, and entertaining! It’s also the perfect place to hang out with us as together we await the efflorescence of spring and celebrate Hubway’s upcoming full-system reopening by giving away free 24-Hour passes! The show runs through March 16, and you can find us there on Saturday, March 15th. Click here for more information on the show!

We’re happy to announce that Boston has been selected by PeopleForBikes as a Green Lane Project City. We will participate in an intensive two year program to build protected bike lanes in Boston.

“Over the next six years, I want to take Boston from one of the best bicycling cities in the country to one of the best in the world.  Investing in protected bike lanes is a critical path to that success,” Boston’s Mayor Martin Walsh said.

MassBike Update

Written by Boston Biker on Mar 13

Got this in the email, lots of stuff going on over at MassBike!

——————
MassBike Goes To Washington
Next week, the MassBike team heads to Washington, DC to join bicycle advocates from across the country at the National Bike Summit!

We look forward to joining our fellow advocates in educating our elected leaders about the latest issues and asking for more funding for bike transportation.

Boston Speaks Up For Protected Bike Lanes

At a crowded meeting Wednesday night at Boston City Hall, attendees packed into Room 801 to review the 25% design plans for the Connect Historic Boston bike trail and share their thoughts on the project.

One after another, citizens came up to the microphone to voice their support for the proposed network of cycle tracks around downtown Boston and the North End. A common theme expressed by many speakers was how this project would not just serve those who already ride bikes, but inspire new people to try riding.

MassBike Executive Director David Watson spoke in favor of the project, saying, “Some people doubted Hubway when it was first launched, but it has quickly become part of the city’s fabric faster than anyone imaged. So too will this project become a part of the fabric of Boston.”

He added that, while he is generally in favor of the current design, he wanted to see particular attention paid to the intersection treatment and signal timing, and more consideration given to how commuter cyclists will enter and exit the cycle track on Causeway Street.

You can review detailed plans and meeting minutes from past public meetings on the project here.

Path And Complete Streets Funding Moves

Forward In MA Senate

The Massachusetts Senate took an important step toward increasing funding for bicycle and pedestrian paths and other infrastructure this week. The transportation bond bill was reported out of the Senate bonding committee, and is now in the Senate Ways and Means Committee. It is scheduled for a vote by the full Senate next week, where it is expected to pass. MassBike led advocacy efforts that protected $377,255,000 for bicycle and pedestrians paths, and also played a significant role in ensuring $50 million for a Complete Streets certification and incentive program. The bill also provides for an additional $23 million in funding for other bike-related projects.

We thank the members of the Senate bonding committee, including Chairman Brian Joyce (D – Milton) and Senator Ken Donnelly (D – Arlington), for helping to ensure this funding has remained in the bill.
