Longfellow Bridge Continues To Accumulate Horrible Sinage
Written by Boston Biker on Oct 07What the hell…so now they have put down some kind of jogging sharrows? It looks to me an awful lot like the juggalo logo…
…yea then there are these.
Literally three signs cut up and duct taped back together, with sharpie clarification…what the actual hell.
There is about seven of these all facing the Boston side. I guess the idea is that all the pedestrians are supposed to walk on one side of the tiny sidewalk that is currently being shared by cyclists and pedestrians.
Only about a million problems with this. There is no signs facing the Cambridge side, so people walking from that direction have no idea what is going on. Then there is the problem that…people walk on the right, its been put into their heads forever.
These are clearly not standard signs, they had to jury rig them together from parts. As far as I can see over the last couple days not a single pedestrian has noticed the signs (or they have seen them and not understood what they are supposed to do). No one is moving to the left, and no one gives a single shit about those signs.
This is like part four or five in the saga of “you can’t fix shitty design with signs.”
The solution remains simple, and has been the same since the construction started. CLOSE THE BRIDGE TO CARS, have cyclists ride in the damn road where they belong, and leave the sidewalk to the pedestrians, the road could still be open to emergency travel, and the whole thing would run so much smoother. The Longfellow has always been used by a majority of non-car users, and the infrastructure should reflect this.

BTD Installing “Share The Road” Signs Around Boston
Written by greg on Mar 13Greg Hum has been riding a bike everywhere since 2008, plays drums on his bike, organizes the annual Midnight Marathon Bike Ride, and shares stories and more on his personal blog, The Humble Cyclist. Tweet at him, bro: @thehum.

This morning on my commute into Boston, I spotted BTD prepping some “Share The Road” signs to be hung up on Comm. Ave. by Kenmore Sq.
When I walked by the same spot this afternoon, I couldn’t find them anywhere. Has anyone seen where they’ve been put up?

New Signs Encouraging People To Use Lights On South West Corridor
Written by Boston Biker on Nov 19I have gotten multiple reports that there are big signs urging people to use lights at night (as well as reminding them its the law) on the southwest corridor. This is for sure the time of year when you need some good lights on your bike, be sure to have a white front light, and a red back light, and make sure they are bright!
Its things like this that don’t cost the city much money or effort that are going to be important in changing the culture of Boston. Little things do matter, thanks City of Boston!
Pictures via bike forums, thanks Fenway for the tip!
EDIT: now with video! Thanks William!
He says:
Looks like the Boston police are enforcing light laws on the SW corridor bike path. I passed a flashing traffic sign that said, “Be Bright, Bike With Lights At Night, Massachusetts State Law”. Here’s a short video I took of the sign: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JxiN_pA6QE
The next time I passed through, there was a police car with lights flashing at the intersection. At Lamartine and Atherton, I think. A helmetless, lightless biker passed me on the path, and was flagged down, lectured, and probably ticketed by the cop.
Thought you’d like to know and maybe pass that on to your readers. Looks like the Boston police are serious about enforcing at least some cycling laws.
I doubt they were given tickets (I could be wrong) but they most likely were given a talking to, which is totally fine in my opinion.
