Fatal Crash On Comm. Ave. In Brighton
Written by Boston Biker on Aug 10Edit: It seems the young lady later died of her injuries.
At about 4:17pm, on Monday, August 9, 2010, officers from Area D-14 (Brighton) responded to a radio call for an accident involving a bicyclist being struck by a motor vehicle in the area of Warren Street and Commonwealth Ave. On arrival, officers located and observed a 24 year-old female victim being attended to and treated by EMS. The female victim, suffering from life threatening injuries, was transported to the Brigham & Women’s Hospital where she later succumbed to injuries and was pronounced. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
AB Bikes, and others have reported a potential fatal crash on Comm. Ave. last night, anyone have details?
I’ve been hearing reports of a bad bike accident, yesterday evening at the intersection of Kelton St and Comm Ave. There is nothing official yet, but you can read reports/tweets here: http://www.universalhub.com/2010/bicyclist-hit-car-brighton
From what I’ve heard, she was a 24 years old, no helmet, wearing headphones, who may have run a red light. The driver apparently had the right of way. Again, the reports are unverified.
Be careful out there. I will post more details as I get them.
Edit: Lots of reports of a lot of blood in the street from the accident, but I still cant confirm a fatality…I think we can be sure it was a lady, thats about all I can confirm at this point.
Edit: Here is the location of the crash, Kelton and Comm. Ave.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with the cops, they say they don’t have any fatalities recorded for yesterday involving a bicyclist, so hopefully that means that the young lady survived.
EDIT: Here is a picture of the bike at the scene. Pink and purple step through frame. Looks geared, and with brakes (aka, this wasn’t a fixed gear bicycle).
Edit: The globe seems to have finally noticed, no new info however.
Edit: More info about the young lady who died Marlene “Marly” Pineda here.

New Bike Lanes On Comm Ave
Written by Boston Biker on May 11and new sharrows on Arlington apparently! Pics soon!
Edit here are some pics, I took some video too, but you will have to wait till I get home for me to upload that stuff.
I have to say I am impressed with these lanes, They still seem to be missing markings in the underpass area, and they need to work a bit on the transitions at the ends (I suggest Boston’s first bike box!) but the entire experience of riding down this street has changed. You feel…AWESOME! No longer are you looking for doors opening on your right, while having cars zoom by on the left. Going through the underpass is a DREAM. You get the whole left lane to yourself, with a nice big buffer zone to keep cars out. You pop up on the other side and don’t have to worry about merging with traffic.
The basic way you used to have to take that underpass was move far to the left in the right hand lane (so people could see you and not try to go around the corner too fast) and then when you got to the top you had to merge with moving traffic. No more! Now you just sort of glide through easily and really the entire feel of it is great.
They even did a lot of work on the street in front of the public garden, getting you around the right hand turn. There are now sharrows on the left most and right most lane, when I get the video’s up you can see them in action.
I think this is a banner job from the city, and hope that we see more innovative solutions like this.
EDIT: here are the videos I promised
EDIT: Sorry about the pics can’t seem to get them to rotate, just flip your head to one side for now I guess 🙁
Also just heard that there are more markings and bike boxes coming soon to these lanes, so those of you worried about the transitions give it a couple days and then re-evaluate. Also heard that they are going to be green!

New Bike Lanes Everywhere!
Written by Boston Biker on Sep 16I have had a very good problem lately, it has been hard to keep up with all the new bike lanes going in! Seems like they are going to be putting them in on Comm. Ave, and North Harvard, and Columbus Ave. Huzzah! If you see new lanes popping up, shoot me an email.
The latest sightings seem to be new bike lanes on Beacon near BU, spotted by 100psi and pedalstrike.
I also saw what looked like new bike lanes being painted on River street coming over from Allston into Cambridge. At least I think they are new bike lanes there was no markers on them, and frankly I wouldn’t be sad if they were not bike lanes, cause the shoulder on River is really rough, and I would hate to think they were gonna put a bike lane over that mess…sorry no picture yet of these, will keep you posted. We are still very far from a complete system of bike lanes and bike infrastructure, but every long journey starts with single step…I am pleased to see we have taken a couple small steps lately.
