Boston Bikes Update, Volunteer, Helmet Hub, And More!

Below is the update from Boston Bikes (the city), I am pretty stoked about the HelmetHub vending machines, I got to see them being made, and the final product looks pretty damn amazing.

Volunteer for Boston’s Annual Counts & Safety Campaign 

Boston Bikes is seeking volunteers for two important projects:

  • Count cyclists during the Boston Bikes annual counts.  These counts help shape policy and infrastructure changes.   Dates and times as follows: September 15  to October 7.   7 AM-9 AM and 4 PM -6 PM.Minimum shifts are two hours.
  • Spread the word about bike safety during Boston’s Urban Cycling Safety Campaign.  Put flyers on bicycles or be a riding ambassador. Dates and times as follows: September 15 to October 7th. Flexible times. Minimum shifts are two hours.

Join Boston Bikes Advisory Group. Apply now.

Boston Bikes is seeking applicants to become to be part of the Boston Bikes Advisory Group (BBAG). The BBAG will advise the Director of Boston Bikes on priorities related to cycling in Boston and serve as a liaison to the cycling community.  Applications are due September 13, 2013.

HelmetHub Machine  HelmetHub Launch

Thursday, September 5, 2013
12:30pm – Boston Public Library

Join Mayor Tom Menino, Boston Bikes, and Hubway in a ribbon cutting ceremony for HelmetHub, Boston’s helmet vending machines. HelmetHub will provide a way for cyclists to rent or purchase a helmet at Hubway stations.  Ceremony takes place outside at the Hubway station.

East Boston Makers & Movers event. We are looking for volunteers to staff tables where attendees will have the chance to design signage, help orient bike parking, and learn about bike safety. Friday, September 6, 3-6pm. Contact Mariko Davidson at mariko.davidson@cityofboston.gov for more information.

Recurring opportunities:

Do you like WordPress? We are seeking a volunteer webmaster who can help us troubleshoot. This is a long-term opportunity, that requires few hours of work. $5 Subsidized Hubway Memberships

The City of Boston offers $5 annual Hubway memberships to residents of Boston who are receiving public assistance or have low incomes. These
memberships also includes a free helmet.

What we are doing:
We promote cycling and bikeshare in the city by providing quick and easy access to helmets.

Why we need your help:
We want to make sure we’re serving the needs of the bike community as best we can, so were conducting a survey about bikeshare users habits THIS WEEKEND!  (Sept 29-30th).  We need people to help us poll people that use Hubway stations or walk by them this weekend.  Some promotional goods will be provided to those who participate in the survey; so it should be easy to stop people.

It’s people counting season! Volunteer to help count and be counted.

Boston Bikes needs volunteers to staff counting locations across the city during the morning (7a-9a) and evening (4p-6p). Sign up here to learn more.

Central Transportation Planning Staff is looking for bike and pedestrian counters during 7am-7pm September 11, September 12 and/or September 13th, as well as Saturday, September 15 or Sunday, September 16th. Email Christine Bettin at[email protected] for more details and to sign up.

People counts are critical to tracking trends and making the case for more livable streets.

Youth Programs Open House February 10th

As we kick off a new year of youth programs at Bikes Not Bombs, we want to take an opportunity to share with you some of the highlights and successes of the last year. Did you know that four current Youth Employees are taking our Vocational Training program? Did you know that we ran TWO new programs over the summer? Did you know that BNB has a team of youth community organizers who are getting ready to launch after-school mobile bike shops? The BNB Youth Programs OPEN HOUSE is a chance for parents, friends, teachers and supporters of our youth to see just how amazing they are. Bring a snack to share and prepare to be amazed: Friday, February 10th, 6-7:30 pm at the Hub.

Be a Hero… help restore the shine to BNB’s offices and youth program space!

Sometimes the most heroic jobs are not the most glamorous! On Monday January 16, from 10am to 3pm, Bikes Not Bombs will be conducting a deep cleaning of our Hub (lots of dusting will be involved, but also scrubbing fingerprints off walls, degreasing the back corners of the kitchen, and vanquishing dirt wherever it rears its ugly head). Come help out for an hour or three. Pizza, tunes, and double volunteer credit will be provided. Please email Stephen Bosco at [email protected] if you think you might come.

Seeking Experienced Grant Writer for International Programs

This rural health center in Amuru, Northern Uganda is crowded, for those who live close enough or have transportation. Many more people can’t get here, but are served by 400 traveling Village Health Workers, soon to be outfitted with bicycles through a partnership with BNB. The grant writer will help develop funding sources for this project and others.

Bikes Not Bombs is seeking an experienced grant writer on a contract basis to help us implement our foundation funding strategy for International Programs in 2012. The grant writer will assist with foundation research, develop a grant proposal submissions calendar, write grants for specific international projects and for International Programs as a whole and train International Programs staff to sustain these systems beyond the contract period.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with the International Programs staff to develop a foundation fundraising plan.
  • Research prospective foundation funding sources in collaboration with International Programs staff.
  • Organize the foundation research and develop a grants calendar and system for submitting grants.
  • Write a series of grants for specific international projects and for International Programs as a whole.
  • Train the International Programs staff to sustain these foundation fundraising systems long-term.

International Programs Internship – Maya Pedal

Maya Pedal is an indigenous organization in San Andres Itzapa, Guatemala, that designs, fabricates and distributes labor saving pedal-powered machines constructed from bicycles and bicycle parts. Some of these machines include maize de-grainers, maize grinders, water pumps, coffee depulpers, macadamia nut shellers, aloe shampoo blenders, and roofing tile-setting machines among others. Maya Pedal is a leading inventor of this appropriate technology and has global recognition and reach.

In 2012, Bikes Not Bombs intends to provide increased support for the organizational development of Maya Pedal, and is looking for a qualified and enthusiastic intern to work with BNB International Programs to accomplish this aim.

Internship Details:

  • The Maya Pedal Intern will report directly to the International Programs Director who will provide ongoing supervision and support.
  • This is a 10-25 hour a week position based in Boston, and starts as soon as possible. The duration of the internship is dependent on the completion of the work.
  • This is an unpaid internship.

Hiring Bike-A-Thon Event Assistant for Spring/Summer

Join the fun and excitement of organizing Bikes Not Bombs’ biggest event of the year — the Bike-A-Thon! We’re looking for a dedicated hard-working individual to take on certain responsibilites like planning rest stops along the route, coordinating exhibitors and activites at the festival, supervising volunteers, and more. Some experience with event planning or the Bike-A-Thon is a plus, but not required. Pay will be $10 per hour, and would like for someone to work March through June. Bike-A-Thon Event Sponsorship Volunteer Needed

Help us prepare for Bikes Not Bombs’ biggest event of the year, the Bike-A-Thon & Green Roots Festival! The event sponsorship volunteer will work closely with the Director of Grassroots Fundraising & Events and will play an important role in researching and soliciting financial and in-kind donations from local businesses. This is the perfect role for someone that has solid written and oral communication skills, familiarity with internet research, familiarity with Boston businesses and neighborhoods, and the ability to visit local companies to request and pick up donations. This is a great way to get a behind-the-scenes look into planning the Bike-A-Thon and you’ll earn volunteer credits for your time, which can be used to purchase used parts at the bike shop. This position requires 3-5 hours per week and we are looking to fill it ASAP. Hours are flexible.

Volunteer Videographer Needed

We’re looking for an experienced videographer to create a 5-10 minute promotional video to be posted on our website and be shown at fundraising events and community presentations. We would like the video to describe our programs and show the impact of our work by highlighting several individuals in the Bikes Not Bombs community. We’d like filming to begin in late March and to take place over several sessions so the video can cover a variety of BNB programs and activities. The final product should be ready by early July. We’re looking for someone that is professional, creative, flexible and is dedicated to BNB’s mission. College students and recent graduates are encouraged to apply. You must own or have access to your own equipment, including camera, sound equipment, and editing software. This is a volunteer position, but you will earn volunteer credit for your time, which can be used to purchase used parts at the bike shop. Upon successful completion of the video, you may be eligible for up to $250 compensation, depending on the availability of funds and the quality of the final product. Help MassBike Evaluate The Blue Line

A while ago I noted that MassBike had gotten the bike hours extended on the blue line, now they need your help to make sure its working!

We need help from our members and supporters to make sure that this program continues indefinitely. To evaluate the new program, the MBTA has asked East Boston community organizations and MassBike to help count bicycles and evaluate train occupancy rates during peak hours – information that is essential to making the new extended hours permanent.
