MBTA Opening New Pedal And Park Cages
Written by Boston Biker on Apr 12Awesome, I hope every station gets one. From here:
———————-
As part of a federal grant program to provide access to safer bike-locking options, MBTA officials said they are officially opening new “Pedal and Park” facilities to the public on April 16. The first structure will be unveiled to riders at the Oak Grove station, and allow cyclists to place their two-wheeled modes of transportation inside a caged area that can only be accessed with the use of a registered CharlieCard or Bike CharlieCard.
The Oak Grove facility will be one of the first of 12 new “high security” bike parking cages that will be rolled out for public use between April and September of this year. Other spots that will be getting the bike upgrades include South Station and Braintree. Additional card-access bike cages will be opened in Malden, Davis Square, Ashmont, Back Bay, Dudley, Alewife, Salem, and Beverly. Seven will open later this summer, and the last two will open in 2014.

MBTA Improves Security At Pedal & Parks
Written by Boston Biker on Mar 20From Massbike:
The MBTA has announced a long-awaited enhancement to its “Pedal & Park” secure bike parking facilities. Ever since the first Pedal & Park was installed at Alewife Station in 2008, MassBike has urged the T to close what we saw as a significant gap in security – there was no way to identify the owner of a Bike CharlieCard used to control entry (and those cards were available to anyone simply by asking).
So we are pleased that, effective May 1, 2013, bicyclists must register either a Charliecard OR their Bike CharlieCard online to access these bike parking facilities. There will be no charge for this and it will further enhance the MBTA′s efforts to provide safe and secure areas for bike parking.
Click here to register your Bike CharlieCard or regular CharlieCard now for uninterrupted access to Pedal & Parks.

New “Pedal & Park” Coming To Ashmont Station
Written by Boston Biker on Oct 05More great news from DotBike, new bike cage aka “pedal and park” is getting installed at Ashmont.
Hi DotBikers,
Just wanted to update you on some news on one of our advocacy fronts. The MBTA has slotted Ashmont station as the location for one of six new secured ‘Pedal & Park’ facilities to be installed on their system.
The T has received stimulus money that will allow construction 6 new secured facilities (i.e. cameras and card only access) as well as some canopies that will provide racks under roofs but no walls. DotBike and others have been working to make sure that at least one Dorchester station was selected for a secured “Pedal & Park” facility and Ashmont station was chosen.
The T has committed to installing the Ashmont facility in conjunction with the completion of the station and have consulted with neighboring civic groups and the original station architects to ensure that the facility will be designed to integrate well with the station.
The facility will have secured space for approximately 80 bicycles along with some additional outdoor racks and will be located near Dorchester Ave. at the southern end of the station.
The design is currently being finalized and construction is slated for next spring with a completion date of late June or early July.
cheers,
DotBike
