Union Square Getting Bike Boxes
Written by Boston Biker on Sep 21These little guys have been springing up all over the union square area.
So far…lets just say that the motorists and cyclists have not been understanding how to use them.
There were two giant open boxes here, and a million cyclists crammed into the bike lane to my right. As soon as some cars pulled up we got this.
Perhaps with more use they will get the idea, but personally I would have liked to see some targeted enforcement by police officers for the first couple of days, no tickets needed, just giving them a chat and showing them that Somerville is serious about the bike boxes.

Also as a side note, see the nice textured green stuff they painted the bike boxes with, its not slick in the rain, and it doesn’t reflect light. However the paint the city laid down over the existing bike lanes is neither textured, and it does shine very brightly in the sun blinding you in the morning and evening. More of this bumpy green stuff, less of the slightly blue reflector paint please.

New Bike Lanes Popping Up All Over The Place
Written by Boston Biker on Jun 30Not only have the cities of Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston been out in force re-painting old bike lanes, but I have seen some new ones go in as well. School street in Somerville got a new one, Mass Ave in Central saw a slight modification to some old one (see below), and there have been other small and large changes around town.
These are the new Central Square treatments. I like how they have tried to make sure the parked cars get right up against the curb, leaving just that much more space for non-door zone bike lane.
Have you noticed any new bike infrastructure? Tiss’ the season to be laying down thermo-plastic it seems.

New Forums!
Written by Boston Biker on Mar 25Just integrated the old forums into the main site…this should come with several benefits, namely if you already have a user account you should now have a forum account (no more double sign up), and it should just work better.
The old forums are going to be shut down in a couple weeks, you can find them here. If there is anything you need from over there I would suggest you get it soon.
The new forums are here. You can also get to it from the link at the top of the page.
The only bad thing of the process is that I was only able to rescue some of the previous posts. Most of the forum simply will not move over…so this just means you can now fill the forums with all new conversation!
Test it out and let me know if things are broken.
Thanks

New Mobile Site Feature
Written by Boston Biker on Jan 26Just added the ability to optimize your site for mobile users, you should find the settings in the settings menu (its the wptouch one), its a little tricky, but if you just take a while to read it should be fine. If you don’t care about optimizing your site for mobile, you can ignore this. If you now go to bostonbiker.org using your smart phone you will see a much different experience.
Snazzy, as always let me know if this breaks anything for you.
