New Bike Lanes On Mass Ave!

Written by Boston Biker on Dec 29

Looks like the long awaited bike lanes on the Boston side of the Mass Ave bridge got painted some time in the last couple days. They are paint, and not thermo-plastic so they probably will need a refresh next year, and the bike symbols are not in yet, but its good to see them. I rode them Cambridge bound today (sorry too cold to stop and take a picture), and will ride them Boston bound tonight. So far they are having all the problems new bike lanes have (people driving in them, people parking in them), but that always happens when new bike lanes go in. I did see several cyclists using them, and its nice to see the bike lane system starting to become an interconnected system. Instead of a series of random bits of lane.

Anyone else have give them a try yet? Thoughts? Pictures?

Door Zone Indicating Bike Lanes On Mass Ave

Written by Boston Biker on Aug 30

I noted a while ago that I saw “proto-lanes” on Mass Ave near Porter, seems they finally put in the new lanes.

I am not sure if this was done this way intentionally, but I like it. It mentally nudges the cyclists out towards the left hand side of the lane, and indicates visually the “door zone.” What do you think? Is this brilliant, a beneficial accident, or a new way to design door zone bike lanes?

New Bike Lanes On Mass Ave

Written by Boston Biker on Jul 18

I was riding north out of Harvard square this weekend and noticed what look like he white temporary paint markings for new bike lanes on Mass Ave heading north going out of the square. Will keep an eye on them to see when they bloom into full fledged bike lanes, but some lanes there would be great. Anyone else notice these?

Report From Mass Ave Bike Lane Meeting

Written by Boston Biker on Apr 15

Harrumph! has a nice report from the Mass Ave bike lane,

This is where I was particularly wrong. I have been sure this city lacked the political will to take parking. Even though numerous U.S. and European cities have done that for years, we have seemed to have been short on the guts. No more.

Of course, this being oddly suburban-ish automobile-centric Boston, it did not approach the ideal of isolated cycle tracks, so motor vehicles, pedestrians and bikes each got safe, separate paths. Hey, this is still a huge advance and again, a solution to the insoluble.

read the rest here.

Anyone else go to that meeting (I was horribly sick) and want to leave a report in the comments?

(thanks ben for the link)
