Bikes Not Bombs Is Having A Holiday Party!

Join us at our end of year party to celebrate an amazing 2015!

We’ll be unveiling our new series of bike mechanics training videos and celebrating the contributions of staff members David Branigan and Derek McIntire as they transition out of their roles at BNB, and Stephen Bosco who has stepped back to a lead volunteer role. All ages welcome, we’ll provide light appetizers, cake served at 7:30pm, cash bar available.

The shop will be closing at 6:30pm on 12/9 and at 6pm on 12/16. We will also be closed 12/24 to 1/3, reopening for normal hours on Monday January 4th. Please check the website as these dates are subject to change.

We are particularly seeking candidates with experience in legal services, nonprofit financial management, fundraising, and human resources. People with a strong connection to our programs, mission, and the communities we serve are encouraged to apply.

We will be shipping our second container to our new partner Cycloville in Kenya on December 13th. Please join us! Stop by our warehouse for an hour or stay all day.

Volunteer of the Month Susan Redlich at Maya Pedal

Volunteer of the Month – Susan Redlich!

Susan Redlich has been an invaluable part of Bikes Not Bombs since the beginning. She started collecting bike boxes in her basement to ship to Nicaragua in the 80s, and continues to load containers to this day. She says her favorite part about loading containers is “I can see in my mind the excitement of people unloading the bikes in Ghana, Guatemala, and other partner destinations.” Here is a photo of Susan visiting Maya Pedal in Guatemala. Thank you for all you do for Bikes Not Bombs Susan!

Guests at the 2015 Building Momentum Breakfast

Successful 5th Annual Building Momentum Breakfast!

On Thursday October 15th 85 people joined us at Bikes Not Bombs’ Fifth Annual Building Momentum Breakfast. We are especially grateful that over 64% of guests were inspired to support Bikes Not Bombs’ work by committing to multi-year gifts and in total the breakfast raised over $69,000 for the next 5 years. Thank you to Ula Cafe for catering, Barrington Coffee for the coffee, Cambridge Innovation Center for the space and all of our guests and table captains for attending. Bike Infrastructure Planning and Design WorkshopJoin the Boston Cyclists Union on Saturday November 14th from 9-3:30pm to learn how to plan and design different kinds of bike route infrastructure!.

Cranksgiving – Come join the 2nd Annual Cranksgiving ride on November 21st 12pm at Copley! Cranksgiving is a bike ride and scavenger hunt where participants ride all over Boston buying food items to donate to the Greater Boston Food Bank, Red Cross, and Somerville Homeless Coalition. Ride bikes. Buy food. Give back.

Delegation to Honduras – In January join a Witness for Peace delegation to Honduras to visit and connect with a variety of communities to learn about the struggles of Hondurans amidst unfair economic policies, repression and militarization.

Cycloville Video Premiere
Film screening at Ride Studio Cafe

Join Bikes Not Bombs on Wednesday, August 26thfrom 7-9pm at Ride Studio Cafe in Lexington, MA for a celebration of our new international partner,Cycloville, in Nairobi, Kenya.

We will be releasing a 6-minute documentary about Cycloville’s work supporting the local cycling industry and training young mechanics in bike shops all over Nairobi. The documentary will begin at7:30pm with a short discussion and Q&A to follow. Drinks and snacks will be served. Check out thetrailer and RSVP to the Facebook Invite.

Earn-A-Bike graduates from Spring 2015
Applications open for Fall Earn-A-Bike and Adult Instructor Training

Our next session of Earn-A-Bike will be Oct 5th – Nov 5th meeting MondayThursday 4-7pm. This program is co-ed and for 12-18 year olds, applytoday!

Fall Adult Instructor Training will be Sept 14th – 30th. This training will teach adults about basic bike mechanics and working with youth. After the training adults agree to volunteer at 1 day per week for at least one session of Earn-A-Bike or Girls In Action. Learn more and apply on our website.

Join us for the Building Momentum Breakfast!
Be a Table Captain at the Building Momentum Breakfast!

Bikes Not Bombs’ 5th annual Building Momentum Breakfast will take place Thursday, October 15th! The Breakfast is designed to raise financial support for BNB and spread the word about our innovative work.

We are looking for 10-12 Table Captains to make this event a success! Table Captains bring friends, family, and colleagues, anyone who will connect with the mission and work of BNB to the Breakfast. There will be a Table Captain info session and training onWednesday, August 12th from 6-7pm. Please contact[email protected] if you are interested.

We're having an apparel sale!
We’ve got so many jerseys!

On Sunday August 16th, BNB will host an apparel sale for the donated clothing, new and used, that we’ve received. The sale will be at the BNB Hub from 7pm – 8:30pm and all proceeds will help cover the costs of attending the Youth Bike Summit in 2016. Jerseys, riding shorts and a limited selection of cold weather gear will be available. All items are priced $5-$20, bring cash and tell your friends!

Volunteer of the Month
Volunteer of the Month – Martinas Andruis

Martinas Andruis first got involved at Bikes Not Bombs 5 years ago. Martinas was interested in affordable housing as a right, and says that similarly all people should have access to a bicycle. Martinas is a regular at our Thursday Volunteer Nights, and helped load our last two shipments. When we are understaffed we’ve asked Martinas to step up to help lead part of the work. Outside of BNB he’s an artist doing custom painting. Thanks Martinas!

Boston GreenFest – Learn how to have a positive impact on our world, city, neighborhoods and yourself! The largest multicultural environmental music festival is back August 21st – 23rd.

Bike Friday – Arrive by bike to City Hall Plaza on Friday August 28th between 7-9am and enjoy a free breakfast and chat with your favorite bike folks, including BNB!

Mechanics at Earn-A-Bike
Youth Programs Accepting Applications

The next session of Earn-A-Bike will be March 23rd – April 30th, Mondays through Thursdays from 4:00m-7:00pm. The program is open to youth ages 12-18 who are interested in learning bike mechanics and safe riding skills. Applications are available online or at our Hub.

We are also accepting applications for Adult Instructor Training. In this program, adults are taught basic mechanic and mentorship skills by Youth Instructors and in exchange, participants MUST volunteer at least one day per week in Spring Earn-A-Bike.

2015 Bike-A-Thon
Half-Priced Bike-A-Thon Registration OpensMarch 1st!

Our 28th annual Bike-A-Thon will be held on Sunday, June 7th, with a raindate of Sunday, June 21st. We’ll have four routes – 80, 50, 30, and 10-miles. Please mark the date in your calendar and start thinking about recruiting friends to ride with you! Registration opens March 1st and is half price until March 31st. Get exciiitteedd!!

Until February 28th our Winter Overhaul (a complete overhaul of the bike + any parts installations) is $120 plus parts, $80 less than the in-season labor rate. Stop by the shop for a free estimate.

Complete Surly Bikes are now discounted $150 untilApril 1st! The bike we’re most excited about is our18″ Big Dummy Disc Cargo Bike which will sell for $1,560, 25% off the current retail price.

Linus Bikes are also reduced for 2015. We’ve got 3 and 8 speed models available for test rides, and can always special order other colors or models from Linus!

Volunteer of the Month – Frank Ashenuga

This month’s Volunteer of the Month award goes to Frank Ashenuga – Congratulations Frank! An avid, every day and all-weather bike commuter, Frank (pictured far right) joined BNB by taking Adult Instructor Training in the fall of 2014. Since then he has consistently supported youth programs and grown his involvement with BNB. After helping out with fall Earn-A-Bike, Frank started coming on Thursdays for Bike-In to keep up his mechanics skills and help the next generation of bike commuters. In his spare time, he helped out with 2014’s Phone-A-Thon, attended the 30th Anniversary Party, and helped start the Advanced Mechanics course for Adult Instructor Training graduates. Thanks for everything Frank!

Volunteers Needed for the 2015 Bike-A-Thon!

BNB is seeking volunteers with trucks or vans to help set up Bike-A-Thon rest stops on June 7th! All volunteers get a t-shirt, free food all day, and they get to meet and support all of our amazing Bike-A-Thon cyclists!

Steve's Great Divide
Steve’s Great Divide Ride

Steve Reynolds, a BNB volunteer, will be riding 2750 miles this summer from Canada to Mexico while raising funds for BNB, and he’s looking for other cyclists to join him! The route was planned by Adventure Cycling and travels substantial distance off-road. Feel free to tag along for one night or the whole 3 month trip.

Boston Bike Party: Join the Bike Partiers as they #GetUnlucky at February’s party on Friday February 13th! Meet at Copley Square at 7:30pm.

World Bicycle Forum: The 2015 theme for the World Bicycle Forum is Cities For All! At the forum various stakeholders (individuals, groups, NGOs, businesses, and government agencies) will discuss how cities can be organized to the benefit of all it’s citizens. Bikes Not Bombs International Programs Team helped to coordinate this global event and two staff members will be attending! Medellin, Colombia from February 26th – March 1st.

SuccessLink: Bikes Not Bombs is hoping to receive funding through the City of Boston’s Summer Teen Employment, SuccessLink. If you are interested in working with BNB during the summer of 2015, please apply today!

Bikes Not Bombs Is Hiring!

The Bike-A-Thon team is looking to bring on two part-time outreach coordinators this Spring. The Phone Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for calling past riders and encouraging them to register for the ride. The Direct Outreach Coordinator’s role involves tabling at various community events and promoting the Bike-A-Thon in person.

We would prefer to hire the same person for both roles, but it is not necessary.
