Update: Pedestrian Injury Near BU
Written by Boston Biker on Sep 30Got this just now, anyone have details?
Thanks for the update Galen.
———
Just heard preliminary news of a fairly severe accident at BU’s central campus, outside of 675 Comm Ave (Stone Science), corner of Granby St. Bike on car, the rider’s a girl, police arrived and closed down street, EMS on scene and likely transported biker to hospital. Lots of witnesses. Bad news, I hope she isnt hurt bad.
EDIT:
I have reports that it was a pedestrian and not a cyclist? Anyone got any other information on this. It wouldn’t surprise me at all the way people drive/cross the street in that area. While I am never happy when anyone gets injured, it would be nice to not have any more cyclists go down.
the young woman struck by a vehicle on Comm. Ave. was a BU student and was walking, not riding — there was no bike involved. She was taken to the hospital
Thanks for the tip Jenny

Fatal Crash On Comm. Ave. In Brighton
Written by Boston Biker on Aug 10Edit: It seems the young lady later died of her injuries.
At about 4:17pm, on Monday, August 9, 2010, officers from Area D-14 (Brighton) responded to a radio call for an accident involving a bicyclist being struck by a motor vehicle in the area of Warren Street and Commonwealth Ave. On arrival, officers located and observed a 24 year-old female victim being attended to and treated by EMS. The female victim, suffering from life threatening injuries, was transported to the Brigham & Women’s Hospital where she later succumbed to injuries and was pronounced. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
AB Bikes, and others have reported a potential fatal crash on Comm. Ave. last night, anyone have details?
I’ve been hearing reports of a bad bike accident, yesterday evening at the intersection of Kelton St and Comm Ave. There is nothing official yet, but you can read reports/tweets here: http://www.universalhub.com/2010/bicyclist-hit-car-brighton
From what I’ve heard, she was a 24 years old, no helmet, wearing headphones, who may have run a red light. The driver apparently had the right of way. Again, the reports are unverified.
Be careful out there. I will post more details as I get them.
Edit: Lots of reports of a lot of blood in the street from the accident, but I still cant confirm a fatality…I think we can be sure it was a lady, thats about all I can confirm at this point.
Edit: Here is the location of the crash, Kelton and Comm. Ave.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with the cops, they say they don’t have any fatalities recorded for yesterday involving a bicyclist, so hopefully that means that the young lady survived.
EDIT: Here is a picture of the bike at the scene. Pink and purple step through frame. Looks geared, and with brakes (aka, this wasn’t a fixed gear bicycle).
Edit: The globe seems to have finally noticed, no new info however.
Edit: More info about the young lady who died Marlene “Marly” Pineda here.

Fatal Crash In Newton
Written by Boston Biker on May 17Another young kid, another fatal crash, still don’t know what happened.
A bicyclist who was not wearing a helmet died after colliding with an SUV at the intersection of Commonwealth and Lowell Avenues in Newton at about 5:20 p.m. Monday, according to Newton Police Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker.
According to Muriel Mazzarini, who said she was driving the car behind the SUV, the cyclist was traveling east on Commonwealth Avenue when he hit the tail end of the car, which was crossing Commonwealth Avenue from Homer Street onto Lowell Avenue. The witness said she saw blood on the victim’s hand and chest.
“The light turned green and I saw the bike coming down and he smashed right into the car,” she said. “I stopped the car and I got out and went to help. Other people came around and we were all dialing 911.”
More from Wicked Local and pictures here
It is not clear if someone ran a red light or not. What is clear is that someone did something very wrong. My heart goes out to this young mans family. It rips me apart to have to hear about such young people dying in such a way.
More info when I get it.
EDIT: Some people are preparing a ghost bike…I hate having to publish this.
EDIT: Found this pdf of meeting notes from a pubic meeting last year that seems to indicate there have been previous fatal crashes on this stretch of Comm Ave in Newton. I can’t know for sure if this is the same location, but could there be something wrong with the way the road is designed here? An excerpt below.
John Allen, 7 University Park, Waltham, spoke on the item as a representative of the MassBike Technical Advisory Committee. He urged the city to pay careful attention to the bicycle lanes at intersections on Commonwealth Avenue. There was a fatal bicycle accident at an intersection on Commonwealth Avenue.
EDIT: Here is Andy Von Guerard’s (the cyclists) facebook page, and here is his fathers with a heart breaking message at the top. It is always so strange to see these sort of internet time capsules. A little slice of time captured forever in what is usually a mundane part of our day…
EDIT: Some more discussion on other blogs about this. here and here.
Both of these sites raise troubling questions about just how strange this accident seems. I tend to agree, it seems very odd.
The Boston Globe also has an article here.
Sources seem to indicate he ran a red light and smashed into a car…this is very tragic and preventable. Be careful people, follow the law, and wear a helmet!
Another update here.

Cyclist Dies After Being Hit In Brookline
Written by Boston Biker on Sep 1422 year old Tracy Milillo was involved in a crash on Sept. 9th and passed away Sept 11. It seems that she was hit by a car, but details are still coming in. My thoughts go out to her family and I urge you all to be careful. Cyclist deaths are a rare occurrence, but all the more shocking and sad because of it. It is even more tragic that such a young person has been killed.
A 22-year-old bicyclist has died of head injuries from a crash in Coolidge Corner last week.
Police say Tracy Milillo, a recent Emmanuel College graduate from Holbrook, N.Y., died around 1:35 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. Millio never regained consciousness after the crash, police said.
Police are still investigating how the crash occurred. Though initial reports from witnesses indicated Milillo had been struck by a motorist, Capt. Michael Gropman said the vehicle may have never made contact with Milillo’s bike.
…
Police believe Milillo was near 30 Longwood Ave. when the crash occurred. She was not wearing a helmet, they said.
Gropman said police are examining the bicycle and vehicle for any mechanical defects. Forensic reports could come back as early as this week, Gropman said.
Police are asking anyone who may witnessed the accident, which occurred around 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, on Longwood Avenue, to contact the department.
Brookline Police can be reached at 617-730-2222.(via Wicked Local Brookline)
