Bike Counts Show Amazing Growth In Cycling In Boston!
Written by Boston Biker on Oct 14This is fantastic! It also seems to match up with the sheer abundance of cyclists I have seen on the roads lately.
From the city:
Each year, we estimate the growth of bicycling in Boston by counting the number of people on bikes at key locations. Last month, volunteers stood at 13 locations during the commuting hours of 7-9am and 4-6pm.
We measured a 104% increase in cycling since 2007. Additionally, recently-released US Census Bureau data estimates that 2.4% of Bostonians rode bikes to work in 2014.
We owe tremendous thanks to the volunteers who helped us complete the bike counts this year and in years past. While this information doesn’t fully show travel patterns or capture all people who ride bikes, it does show that more and more people are choosing to bike in Boston.

Cambridge Installs Bike Counters!
Written by Boston Biker on Jun 23Saw this little gem on the way home, I was lucky biker 267! They had just gotten done filling in the dirt, so that is 267 bikers since around 4pm or so (it was about 5:20pm when I took this). Not bad!
From the Cambridge bike count website:
Counting into the future
In 2015, Cambridge installed a permanent bicycle count station in Kendall Square, on Broadway.
The “Eco Totem” counter (made by the Montreal-based company Eco-Counter) counts cyclists via in-ground loop detectors and displays on the monitor how many cyclists pass by. The counter displays daily and cumulative totals and also captures weather data to use for analytical purposes. The data can be used in many ways:
- To publicly show how many people are bicycling and make a statement that “bicyclists count”
- The 24/7 data can be used to analyze daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal patterns. This can be used to help extrapolate data from other counts
- The data assist with determining crash rate analyses
Live tracking of the counter will be available in July 2015.
More People Bicycling
The percentage of Cantabrigians who commute by bicycle has also been rising steadily over the past two decades. The 1990 US Census reported that 3% of residents commuted by bicycle; by 2000 that number rose to 4%; the American Community Survey for the three year period 2009-2011 shows 7% of residents commuting by bike.
Additional local surveys of Cambridge residents suggest that from 7% to 9% of Cambridge residents commute to work by bike. Local surveys also found a lot of bikes in Cambridge: for every 100 households, there are approximately 150 bicycles.
Traffic counts conducted by the city found that between 2002 and 2012, rush hour bicycle trips in Cambridge tripled in number. In 2014, the total numbers actually took a dip down, although detailed analysis seems to identify construction impacts as a primary cause. Click here for more information.

Help DotBike Count Bikes!
Written by Boston Biker on Sep 25Got this from DotBike, if you have some time and live in Dorchester give it a read!
—————–
Hi DotBikers!
Great news, Dorchester is on the map! Please help keep us there! Dorchester has been included in the annual bike counts organized by BostonBikes. However, we need volunteers to do the actual counting.
Counts need to be completed on any weekday between today and Oct 3. Morning shifts are from 7 am – 9 am and evening shifts are from 4 pm – 6 pm. Basically, you just pick a shift and location and then do the count on a day of your choice.
If you are able to volunteer please check this map of locations (http://bit.ly/1tVNSjh), and then e-mail Najah Shakir: [email protected] your preferred locations and shifts. Volunteers are needed for all locations marked with green. Please click on individual markers to see which shifts are available.
The locations are:
1) Dot Ave and Freeport St
2) Dot Ave and Columbia Rd
3) Blue Hill Ave at Glenway
4) Codman Sq.
5) Four Corners
This is really, really important. We need to provide the data to show that yes, people do bike in Dorchester and also that our numbers are growing! If we can’t get bike count data, we risk slipping back into obscurity.
Please email Najah with your preferred shift and location.
See you on the street!

City Releases Its 2013 Bike Counts As Awesome Info Graphics
Written by Boston Biker on Jan 06I think there are a lot of stories in this data, but the one that really stands out is MORE BIKES! This town is just exploding with new riders. Are you one of them? Have you started riding since 2007? Have you noticed things improving? I feel like every year I see more and more riders, more and more good behavior, and more and more people riding year round. BICYCLES!
——————-
Since 2007 Boston has seen a 78% increase in cycling. Below you can find data from 2013, as well as data dating back to 2007. Click on each image to view a larger version.
Counts are conducted each Fall during the hours of 7-9am and 4-6pm. Thank you to all those who have volunteered their time throughout the years.
Questions, comments, or concerns? Please contact Najah Shakir at [email protected].
