New “Pedal & Park” Coming To Ashmont Station
Written by Boston Biker on Oct 05More great news from DotBike, new bike cage aka “pedal and park” is getting installed at Ashmont.
Hi DotBikers,
Just wanted to update you on some news on one of our advocacy fronts. The MBTA has slotted Ashmont station as the location for one of six new secured ‘Pedal & Park’ facilities to be installed on their system.
The T has received stimulus money that will allow construction 6 new secured facilities (i.e. cameras and card only access) as well as some canopies that will provide racks under roofs but no walls. DotBike and others have been working to make sure that at least one Dorchester station was selected for a secured “Pedal & Park” facility and Ashmont station was chosen.
The T has committed to installing the Ashmont facility in conjunction with the completion of the station and have consulted with neighboring civic groups and the original station architects to ensure that the facility will be designed to integrate well with the station.
The facility will have secured space for approximately 80 bicycles along with some additional outdoor racks and will be located near Dorchester Ave. at the southern end of the station.
The design is currently being finalized and construction is slated for next spring with a completion date of late June or early July.
cheers,
DotBike

Show The MBTA That Bikes Are An Integral Part Of Any Future Infrastructure Plans!
Written by Boston Biker on Sep 16Thursday morning at the Alewife T station at 7:30am the new secure bike cages will be opened. The rumor is that some of the MBTA higher-ups are not “fully on board” with this whole “bike thing”. So lets show them whats what. Get your bike, and ride it over to the Alewife and park that bad boy in the new bike cage. Lets pack this thing on the first day when the reporters will be on hand to witness the true power of the bicycle! If they get a good response from this set of cages they are much more likely to install them all over.
As an added bonus you get a free, special edition bicycle Charlie card, AND if you have the time you can stick around to see the press hoopla at 10am.
ps. I will be there so you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive Boston Biker in the flesh. And I will have stickers to give out…

MBTA Rolling Out Bike Cage At Alewife T Stop
Written by Boston Biker on May 13Details are still coming in, but it seems the MBTA will be creating a special bike cage (along with a special Charlie card that has Charlie on a bike). The cage will be opened by the card and will provide safer bike parking for the Alewife T stop.
The new cards will also function as normal T cards, so there is no need to carry two at a time.
Hurray bike week! I will try and get my hands on one of these new cards and see what kind of bike they put him on.
Having ample/secure bike parking would encourage more people to take the T, so I hope that this program spreads and cages spring up all over the system. Next up, getting bike racks on EVERY bus…
