25% Design Public Hearing for the Fore River Bridge Replacement Project. The hearing will be held on February 9, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Abigail Adams Middle School Auditorium in Weymouth. The middle
school is located at 89 Middle Street in Weymouth, behind Weymouth Town Hall.

Written statements and other exhibits in place of, or in addition to, oral statements made at the Public Hearing regarding the proposed undertaking are to be submitted to Thomas F. Broderick, P.E., Acting Chief Engineer, MassDOT, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, ATTN: Michael O’Dowd, Project File No. 604382. Such submissions will also be accepted at the hearing. Mailed statements and exhibits intended for inclusion in the public hearing transcript must be postmarked within ten (10) business days of this Public Hearing. Public Meeting For Neponset River Greenway

There is a public meeting this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. where the DCR will present plans on converting an abandoned rail bridge to create a connection from the Neponset Greenway to the Baker Condominiums on the Dorchester side of the Neponset River. It would be great to have cyclists and other path users at this meeting to show support for this project. Please attend if you can. See the info on the meeting below.

DCR SCHEDULES PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS CONVERTING RAILROAD BRIDGE IN LOWER MILLS

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has scheduled a public meeting for November 17 to discuss the agency’s plans to convert a former railroad bridge into a pedestrian bridge across the Neponset River between Dorchester and Milton.

The bridge, built in 1917 as a railway spur serving the former Walter Baker Chocolate Factory, is in severe disrepair. The project will include repairing the steel structure of the bridge, replacing the existing railroad ties with a new 10-foot-wide timber deck, extending a new paved path to existing pathways on both sides of the river, and reconstructing the eroded riverbank on the Milton side of the Neponset.

Converting it to a pedestrian bridge will create a connection between the Neponset River Greenway’s bicycle and pedestrian path and the residential area that includes the Baker Square Condominiums.

The public meeting will be November 17, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Park Mill Function Room of the Baker Square Condominiums, 1243 Adams Street, Dorchester.

Important: Longfellow Bridge Public Meeting

This is super important, seriously if you can go to this and speak up for bicycle infrastructure on the Longfellow. This will most likely be the only chance for 50-75 years to make changes to the way this bridge works, show up and speak out make this bridge work for cyclists.

Come out and speak up!

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a world class Longfellow Bridge, one that allows people to experience the best views of the City, and one that encourages more people to walk, bike and take transit to and from Boston and the surrounding communities.

The number of pedestrians and bicyclists using the Longfellow Bridge has been growing over the past 10 years, while the number of private automobiles has been decreasing.
Now is the time to reallocate space on the
bridge to create a safer more comfortable space for walking and bicycling.

It’s absolutely essential that pedestrians and bicyclists do not get unnecessarily squeezed at the inbound approach to Charles Circle in order to accommodate motor vehicle traffic.

Better connections from the Longfellow Bridge to the Esplanade are a must too. We have an opportunity to reclaim parkland and create a new ADA-accessible pedestrian/bicycle bridge between Charles Circle/the Longfellow Bridge and the Esplanade. It’s important that these improvements be made in conjunction with or in parallel to the Longfellow Bridge project!

Want to find out what the Longfellow Bridge Task Force has been doing since MassDOT gave us the opportunity for more public input into the reconstruction of the Longfellow Bridge? How about speaking up for improving bicyclist access and safety getting on, crossing, and getting off the Longfellow Bridge between Boston and Cambridge? Then you need to come to the public meeting this Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm at the Shriners Hospital Auditorium at 51 Blossom Street, Boston.

The Task Force will present design concepts currently under consideration, including concepts for crossing the bridge by bike, on foot, and by car; for the approaches/intersections at either end of the bridge; and for better connections from the bridge to the Esplanade on the Boston side and to the parkland and paths on the Cambridge side.

This is the one-and-only opportunity for the general public to comment on the design concepts before the Task Force completes its work and submits its recommendations to MassDOT. The concepts represent a range of bicycle facilities from bike lanes similar to what exists now to some much larger and truly innovative ideas. The Task Force wants your comments, and we need your support to make sure that bicyclist (and pedestrian) interests are fairly balanced in this immensely complicated project.

Help Fix The River Street/Western Ave Bridges

We all know river street and western ave need some work, the bike lanes are lakes (frozen at this time of year) and pot hole central (I may or may not have broken my collar bone on one). Go tell these people you want bike lanes, and bike accommodations on river street, western ave, and the bridges! These are major bike corridors and need a lot of improvement.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Highway Division Invites You to a Public Information Meeting for the River Street Bridge/Western Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project

The purpose of this meeting is to provide an overview of the proposed rehabilitation of the historic River Street and Western Avenue Bridges, introduce MassDOT’s design team, answer questions and gather comments.

The River Street Bridge/Western Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project is being undertaken by MassDOT as part of the Commonwealth’s Accelerated Bridge Program. The goals of the project are to improve structural integrity and enhance accessibility. The main objectives are to repair deteriorating elements of the bridges, upgrade structural capacity and improve local street connections and accessibility. The proposed rehabilitation will respect the documented historic status of these landmark structures and preserve as many of the original elements as possible. The River Street Bridge was constructed in 1926 and the Western Avenue Bridge was constructed in 1924. Both bridges are listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places and serve as primary connections between Cambridge and Boston.
