Upcoming Rides In And Around Dorchester
Written by Boston Biker on Aug 11From DotBike:
There are a bunch of fun rides coming up with this Saturday August 10th being particularly eventful in and around the neighborhood. Also a Mayoral forum on Parks and Open Spaces is happening on Thursday next Week. And check out the route of the Fairmount Greenway the following Saturday August 17th. See below for details.
- Saturday Aug 10 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Discover Roxbury Endurance Ride Bike Tour
- Saturday Aug 10 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Mattapan on Wheels Bike fest
- Saturday Aug 10 midnight – dawn Boston By Bike at Night
- Thursday Aug 15 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Parks and Open Spaces Mayoral Forum
- Saturday Aug 17 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Fairmount Greenway Bike Tour
Saturday Aug 10 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Discover Roxbury Endurance Ride Bike Tour
Meets at Roxbury Crossing MBTA Station
Tickets Adults $10, Children $5
OK. The endurance ride through Roxbury’s hills isn’t as tough as a ride in Nepal! Yet, it is still a bit of a challenge. Don’t think of this as a tour, it’s more of an adventure. On this ride we’ll bike to the top Roxbury’s highest peaks, along some of its major roads, and past historic monuments. Stops will be limited to give us more riding time to cover as much of the neighborhood as possible. At the end of the ride, celebrate with a pub meal in Brigham Circle. Difficulty: Challenging.
Tickets and Info: https://discoverroxbury.
Saturday Aug 10 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Mattapan on Wheels Bike fest
Mildred Ave. Community Center, 5 Mildred Ave., Mattapan
This 3rd annual family-friendly biking program is put together by the Vigorous Youth of the Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition. The route will take the group by various spots of interest in Mattapan as well as make the connection to the Neponset River Greenway. Bikes and helmets will be provided at no cost to those who need them. For more info and to Register for free, visit http://mattapanonwheels3.
Saturday Aug 10 midnight – dawn Boston By Bike at Night
Twenty-fifth Annual Tour of Architectural and Historic Sites
Meet at 11:15 PM in front of Trinity Church in Copley Square.
Bring a bicycle with a light and wear something reflective; helmet recommended.
Commemorative T shirts available. Bring something for pot luck breakfast Sunday in Christopher Columbus Park
Please bring a spare inner tube that fits your tires. Sponsored by Back Bay Midnight Pedalers.
In the past this has been 30-ish miles over 7-8 hours, meaning that there are a lot of interesting stops, where I usually learn something new about parts of our city. A few times in the past, the ride has gotten permission to go places that you can otherwise NEVER ride. ’nuff said.

Saturday Aug 17 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Fairmount Greenway Bike Tour
On August 17th, 2013 the Fairmount Greenway Task Force (FGTF) will host Fairmount Greenway on the Move, a bike ride aimed highlighting the current projects along the Fairmount Greenway. A guided group will take participants on tours along the proposed Fairmount Greenway route. The tour will run from South Bay to Mattapan before returning to Upham’s Corner, which will be at a leisurely pace for the 9 miles ride.
No bike? No problem. The FGTF will have some bikes available that participants can use, which will be picked up and returned to South Bay. To request a bike e-mail Michelle Moon at [email protected].
Bike Ride Schedule – August 17th
10:30 Meet at South Bay parking lot with a bike (Mass Ave side of the parking lot near the Hubway Station)
10:50 Arrive at Upham’s Corner
12:00 Arrive in Mattapan Square – bathroom and water break
12:15 Turn around to bike back to Upham’s Corner (for those who want to complete the loop)
1:00 Arrive back at Upham’s Corner for the Street Fair
Please bring plenty of drinking water and a snack. Helmets are strongly encouraged to bring and use while on the tour.
Fairmount Greenway on the Move is an excellent way to see the Fairmount Greenway, meet cool people and get outside to have some fun!

Bicycle Therapy
Written by Boston Biker on Nov 29I have found that just about any problem in my life can be solved by cycling. In fact I pretty much use cycling the way some people talk about apple cider vinegar. If I feel angry, despondent, restless, sad, depressed, need to get away, can’t sleep, feel tired, grumpy, you name it a good bike ride will cure it.
I am no Zen master, and my mind can be scattered at the best of times. Sit me down in a chair with a professional and we might be here for years. But you put me on two wheels, strap on a helmet and the mental sanity comes pouring in. Know your bicycle, know your self.
Something about how the bicycle amplifies the natural ability of a human seems to sort my mind out like no other activity can. You are still using your own body to power yourself, but you are going so much faster and further than you could on your own. You start to feel connected to your body, and that connection seems to help my mental state a great deal (incidentally this might be why I like riding fixed so much, seems to make that connection even stronger).
I don’t think about my worries when I cycle, in fact I think about nothing except cycling. My mind turns off everything but the functions it needs to work my legs, operate my lungs, avoid traffic, and chart my course. It might seem stressful to many to bomb down a busy street in the middle of rush hour, but for my poor overworked mind its the only time in the day when I can enjoy some mental peace and quiet.
My body is going someplace, and my mind is too. When the ride is over my muscles might ache, and I might be sweating like a pig, but my mind feels shiny and new. Something about letting my mind rest for a while, or at least concentrate on far less, seems to really tidy things up in there. I find I come up with a lot of good ideas right after a good ride and I definitely sleep better.
Does anyone else save a bundle on therapy by spending quality time with your bicycle? What maladies do you cure with your bicycle? Share your bike mental health tips in the comments.

Playing With Bike Routes
Written by Boston Biker on Jan 18So I was thinking of sharing some of my bike routes that I take, and maybe the rest of you can share some as well. I have been playing around with MapMyRide.com.
Signing up is free, and only takes a couple second, and if you want you can even put in information about your height/weight etc and it will calculate calories and all sorts of other stuff for you (this ride apparently burns about 300 calories, meaning I am burning about 600 a day as I do it twice a day). Once you have the route all mapped out they have a fun “export to blog” feature (which you see above) they give you a little snippet of code that you paste into a post and whalla, you have a route for people to see.
You can even get real detailed and mark it up with notes, water stops, and all sorts of other fun stuff. If anyone tries it drop me a note in the comments with a link to your post with a map on it.
