Center/South Street In JP Getting Bike Lanes!
Written by Boston Biker on May 07After a bunch of public meetings, and a lot of pressure from JP Bikes and other local groups it looks like the city is going to install bike lanes on Center and South st in JP!
Briefly, the design calls for a mix of both lanes and sharrows along the corridor, with a mixed design of “climbing lanes” on the uphill side of Centre coming up from Jackson, and the uphill side of South coming up from McBride to Sedgwick. The downhill side in these two sections will get sharrows. Full bike lanes will be striped on both sides from Sedgwick to Lakeville on South and Centre with the exception of a short 2-block section in JP Centre. Sharrows will fill out whatever sections I haven’t described. According to Vineet Gupta, the Director of Policy and Planning at the BTD, they plan on implementing these lanes this year!

The Centre and South Transportation and Streetscape Action Plan led by the Boston Transportation Department, Boston Redevelopment Authority, and the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, is dedicated to the overall improvement of the Centre and South Street Corridor in Jamaica Plain, Boston. It addresses two miles from Centre Street, (Jackson Square T Station) to South Street(Forest Hills T Station)- focusing on issues regarding transportation, neighborhood businesses, and streetscape improvements. A Community Advisory Group was appointed by Mayor Thomas M . Menino to work with the project consultant’s McMahon and Associates to develop the Centre and South Street Action Plan. The Advisory group meets monthly to ensure the communities voice is driving the action plan. They represent residents, business owners, neighborhood organizations, and youth. We are excited about the new vision for this corridor. Recently we finalized the corridor vision and published a draft of the streetscape design guidelines. Please visit our website to read more about this exciting planning initiative for Jamaica Plain. You can read more about the project on the BRA’s website here.
