Move By Bike!

Written by Boston Biker on Jun 23

Last October I built myself a rather fetching bicycle trailer.  This summer I used that bad boy to move every single thing I owned from one part of Somerville down the street about a mile to another part of Somerville.  And let me tell you, it was SO MUCH FUN!!!

As you can see I moved EVERYTHING.  Books, plants, random stuff, furniture, my bed, everything.  The trailer was rock solid, even with several hundred pounds of books in boxes in the back.  There were hills, there were pot holes, there were tight turns, not a single thing fell out.  From a purely mechanical aspect everything was top notch.  When I built the trailer I was worried that it’s weak point would be the hitch connection, and it did get a little stress, but it held up well.  I am going to get a steel plate and bolt it through the first couple rows of cross bars, just to put my mind to rest for future moves.

The whole business took about 4 days, I made about 4 trips a day (sometimes a bit more), the pace was relaxed and I never got too wore out, or too sore from doing everything at once.  I took about a week, but if I had to I could have done it all in a weekend.

This is my second cargo bike move, but the first one I ever did by myself.  People smiled at me from the side of the road, and even from cars. I had a great time and would totally do it again!

Anyone Got A Bike Trailer To Lend?

Written by Boston Biker on Aug 07

Got this in the email, if you can help out drop a line to [email protected] and I will pass it along to John.

John Writes:

I figured I would start here first. I am looking for a bike trailer to help with moving during the month of August. Either to borrow for a couple weeks or on specific days. I am willing to pay a security deposit or a small fee for its use. I figured I would reach out to the BB network before I try something on craigs list etc. Any help would be great!

Calling All Cargo Bikes!

Written by Boston Biker on Jun 09

Meridith emailed me looking for people who wanted to help her bike move. Seems like a great way to have fun (I know I had fun with the last bike move I did) and FREE PIZZA AND BEER!!!

See below for details.

Bike Move, Saturday, June 20th, 3pm, Jamaica Plain: I’m intrigued and inspired to attempt a bicycle move from my current place to the one I’m moving to 1/2 mile away in JP. I’m looking for a group of motivated bicyclists to help make this move happen. I’m also looking for the equipment necessary to pull it off, i.e. bike trailers and straps. I’ll hire movers to do the lifting up and down the stairs, and will provide pizza and beer on the other end! If you are interested in helping with this, or have equipment we could use, or suggestions for how to pull it off, please contact me: [email protected] It would also be great to find someone to film this if we are able to pull it off!!

Bike Move!

Written by Boston Biker on Mar 21

Myself and some friends did a bike move this weekend. Worked like a charm. Moved all the stuff, even the big stuff, didn’t use a single drop of gas. Had a great great time too. Special thanks to Metro Pedal Power for helping with the cargo trike, and the Dutch Bicycle Company for letting us borrow two big cargo bikes! You guys rocked!

Lots and lots of pictures below.
