HELP SEND BIKES TO TANZANIA
Sunday October 26th
On Sunday October 26th Bikes Not Bombs volunteers will load a 40′ shipping container full of bicycle aid for the Global Alliance for Africa’s Vijana Center in Tanzania. We start at 10:30 am and work until we finish, which we expect to be 3:30 or 4:00pm. Thanks to City Feed and Supply and Equal Exchange for donating coffee (in partnership). We’ll take a break around 1pm for a pizza lunch (provided) and a short talk about the project. Volunteers can come for any part of this time that works for you. Experience not required. We’ll be moving, sorting, and loading bikes, wheels, and spare parts. You may wish to bring work gloves.
Bikes Not Bombs provided one free container shipment of 441 bikes on April 14, 2008 to the Global Alliance for Africa’s Vijana Center, which is located in Arusha, Tanzania. This will be our second shipment of donated bicycles. The Vijana Center is a vocational training project that serves 200 AIDs-affected youth students, primarily orphans. Language courses in English, French and Spanish are offered (to help students get jobs in Tanzania’s tourism industry), as well as computer skills, secretarial skills, welding and bike mechanics. 90% of the center’s budget is derived from the sale of used bikes assembled at the Center. For more info see http://www.globalallianceafrica.org/tumainiVocationalTrainingCentre.html
Some of you met Bernard Kiwia and Shaibu Laizer, two of the staff of the Vijana Center, when they visited BNB this summer. They were in Boston for the International Development Design Summit (IDDS) at MIT, which is brought together 60 engineers from 20 developing countries around the world, to share techniques and take on design challenges to come up with new designs to address problems in each other’s countries. (The IDDS will be happening in Ghana in 2009!) Bernard and Shaibu also worked at the BNB Bike Shop and helped teach in Earn-A-Bike during their stay in Boston in order to learn more about BNB’s programs and educational model.
DIRECTIONS:
This event does NOT happen at Bikes Not Bombs, but is just around the corner. We will be loading from a big parking lot at 179 Boylston St., Jamaica Plain, 2 blocks from the StonyBrook T stop on the Orange Line. Coming from the BNB HUB at 284 Amory Street, turn right on Amory. At the first traffic light turn right on Boylston Street (where the StonyBrook T stop is on your left) and then turn right into a large parking lot which is part of the Brewery Complex. You’ll see our 40 ft. shipping container parked in this lot, just off the street.

Still looking for a bike? We’ve got a head start on building up bikes for the spring, so our selection of reconditioned bikes is the largest it’s ever been! Thanks to our customers for giving us such good business!
Note: The bike shop will maintain its “summer” hours until further notice, but we will be closed for two weeks in late December–check our website for exact dates TBD soon!

BRATTLEBORO SHIPMENT TO GHANA
Shipment to be loaded Nov 8th
(The final loading of the bikes is November 8th, but there are events leading up to it, so check the full schedule below! See also full info on the event, what to donate, and directions, at http://www.bikesnotbombs.org/node/398)
A group of activists in Brattleboro VT will be collecting and shipping a 40 foot container of bikes and books to Ghana, in partnership with Bikes Not Bombs. Bike dropoff days are scheduled for the upcoming weeks (see below), with the shipment to be loaded on the 8th of November. If you are in the area and would like to donate (bikes, books, or laptop computers) or volunteer to help with the loading, contact Hilary Cooke at [email protected].
The bikes will go to the new Bikes Not Bombs project in Koforidua, Ghana, where BNB mechanic David Branigan is training disabled people to become bicycle mechanics and run a bikeshop business which they will own cooperatively. Read David’s blog about the project at http://bikesnotbombs-eefsa.blogspot.com/ and see photos of the project in its current beginning stages at http://www.flickr.com/photos/bnbghana/.
The books will go to a library in Accra, Ghana, which was built as part of HOYEO – the Homeland Youth Empowerment Project, which was established in 1997 by Brattleboro community members. For more information on the library project and HOYEO, contact Naima K Wade at [email protected] or visit www.abeautifulsite.org

Book Press Warehouse, No. Brattleboro, VT
Volunteers needed! We really hope to complete the loading of the container in one day. Pizza/Soda at 12:00pm (Noon)

HALLOWEEN SCAVENGER HUNT for YOUTH needs VOLUNTEERS
Saturday November 1st
10:00 – 3:00
For our 3rd year in a row, BNB is offering a Halloween Scavenger Hunt to give youth a different opportunity to have fun on their bikes. It is also the one party a year we offer to celebrate the participation of youth in our programming. Volunteers are absolutely crucial to the fun and success of this celebration. We need volunteers to ride with youth teams and remain stationed at checkpoints during the hunt. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, or have Halloween decorations or activities to donate (cardboard needed too for making bike decorations), please contact Christina Illarmo: [email protected] or 617 522 0222 x102.

GHANA FILM SCREENING and BNB PRESENTATION
Thursday November 6
6:30-8:30
Screening at the City Year Headquarters
287 Columbus Ave
Boston, MA 02116
With donated bicycles from Boston and the support of hundreds of local volunteers and donors, Bikes Not Bombs is co-sponsoring the development of a retail shop to be collectively managed by physically challenged people in Koforidua, Ghana. Join us for an inspiring film and discussion about this endeavor.
BNB is undertaking this project in partnership with The Ghana Society for the Disabled and a foundation in Ghana created by an extraordinary man, Emmanuel Yeboah. The First Look Pictures documentary, Emmanuel’s Gift (trailer and photos here: www.emmanuelsgift.com) by Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern, is narrated by Oprah Winfrey. Following Emmanuel’s struggles and achievements, it gives a background for this new project.
For insightful updates and beautiful photos, please check out the blog of David Branigan, BNB staff in Ghana:
http://bikesnotbombs-eefsa.blogspot.com/
A five minute documentary on BNB, One Peace at a Time by Allegra Anderson, will open the evening, and a discussion with Carl Kurz, BNB’s founder and International Programs Director, will follow the screening of Emmanuel’s Gift.
Special thanks to City Year for generously allowing BNB to take advantage of their hi-tech, new, green media space.

MEMBER WORKSHOP – work on your own bike
Thursday November 6th
7:00-9:30pm
HOW IT WORKS:
The Member Workshops happen 7-9:30pm at the BNB Hub at 284 Amory, giving access to bike stands and basic tools so that you can work on your own bike. You may be able to get some advice from other members working on their projects but you should come basically prepared for what you want to do. We do not sell parts at the Hub so you’ll need to purchase parts in advance at the BNB Bike Shop at 18 Bartlett Sq, or another source. If you’re planning an advanced project check it out with Matt Coe in advance.
WHO CAN COME:
* Anyone with a current BNB membership which you have purchased or was awarded to you for a $ donation, bring your membership card to participate. (Lost it? Contact [email protected] for a new one).
* Volunteers, you also earn your “membership” here through your work hours, so you don’t need a membership card (tho it’s cool if you have one!) Instead you can trade 4 volunteer credits for each hour of Workshop time, just use your volunteer time sheet.
SIGN UP IN ADVANCE: We require sign-up to make sure everyone gets a stand. Contact Matt Coe, [email protected] or 617-522-0226.
SKILLED VOLUNTEERS WANTED: If you have some advanced mechanics skills and would like to share with the BNB community, let us know! We could use some more volunteers to help staff these workshops, taking questions and giving mechanical advice.

“A FAR CRY” ORCHESTRA BENEFIT CONCERT FOR BNB
Friday November 7th
Doors at 6:30, music at 7:00
at English High School Auditorium
144 McBride Street
Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
(near the Green St T station)
Come out for an evening of classical music to support Bikes Not Bombs! A great big thanks to A Far Cry for coming to us and offering this amazing benefit. The November 7th concert will feature Handel’s Concerto Grosso op.6 in Gm, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade, and Golijov’s Last Round.
Hailed by the Boston Globe as “one of Boston’s most promising classical music groups,” A Far Cry is making waves, experimenting with how music is performed and heard. A tightly-knit group of 17 young professional musicians, A Far Cry formed in early 2007, seeking the freedom and flexibility of a string quartet as well as the power and beauty of an orchestra. Their high level of musicianship has drawn Boston Symphony Orchestra members to join them as soloists for select pieces. For more info see http://www.afarcry.org/
Operating with rotating leadership and no conductor, A Far Cry is generating interest not only in the concert hall, but also with its innovative model. All artistic decisions are made by vote as a collective, and the musicians take care of ALL the behind-the-scenes work, from booking concerts to exploring the means of fundraising.
A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, A Far Cry is also committed to social change and harmony, donating proceeds from concerts to homeless shelters in the Boston area, and partnering with other non-profits such as the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A Far Cry’s 2008-09 season holds engagements at the Yellow Barn and Kneisel Hall Festivals, concerts from Minnesota to Florida, and a growing hometown series in Boston. Their newest benefit concert will support Bikes Not Bombs on November 7th.

WOMEN & GIRLS COMMUNITY MEETING AT BNB
Friday November 14th
6:00-8:00pm
Calling all women and girls who have been involved in any of the youth programs at Bikes Not Bombs, either as participants or volunteer leaders!
In this community meeting we will brainstorm and discuss ideas for improving and expanding girls programming (specifically Girls In Action) at Bikes Not Bombs. As volunteers, instructors and participants, your input for successful girls’ programming at BNB is vital and we’re excited to hear all the great ideas you have.
Please pass the word to other girls and women who have been involved at BNB! We’re excited that Maria Ortiz and Liat Hoffman will be here for the discussion. Maria founded the Girls In Action program at BNB in 1998 and also served as BNB’s Executive Director from 2002-2005. Liat was Earn-A-Bike Coordinator at BNB, 2002-2004. Christina Illarmo is now the Girls Programming and Bike Safety Coordinator with BNB’s youth programs, running Girls In Action and other programs, and she will facilitate the meeting.

HELP SEND BIKES TO GHANA
Saturday November 15th
On Saturday November 15th Bikes Not Bombs volunteers will load a 40′ shipping container full of bicycle aid for the Village Bicycle Project in Ghana.
See a 10-minute documentary about the Village Bicycle Project at http://current.com/watch/2753186. This film was made in 2006, and follows the loading of a bicycle shipment at Bikes Not Bombs (our old location) and the opening of the shipment in Ghana, with lots of great local footage to give you an inside look at the work in Ghana.
The Village Bicycle Project, (VBP) a non-profit based in the USA, is the largest receiver and distributor of BNB bikes. VBP is working with two Ghanaian businesses to bring the bikes though customs and to distribute them in the capital Accra and around the country. The Ghanaian companies provide bike maintenance workshops in many rural areas – 85 of these workshops are predicted for 2008, wherein 20 participants at a time take a day-long training on bike maintenance and are then eligible to purchase a bicycle for half the market rate for used bikes. The two Ghanaian companies also sell a portion of each shipment to local small bicycle micro-enterprises. In essence VBP and their Ghanaian counterparts have established a wholesale distributor network for used bikes and parts, a critical link in the transportation nexus for Ghana’s growing number of working poor cyclists. VBP also ships low cost specialty bicycle tools to support the growing structure of small bike businesses and do-it-your-selfers. Visit VBP’s web site, www.VillageBicycleProject.org for more info.
DIRECTIONS:
This event does NOT happen at Bikes Not Bombs, but is just around the corner. ALL-WOMEN BASIC MECHANICS CLASS
November 18th – December 16th
Tuesdays 8-10pm
Learn to repair your own bike! This is a “basic” mechanics courses that gives you the skills to do a full tune-up, plus more advanced work overhauling rotational systems. Classes cover bike fit, flats, brakes, gears, and adjustments and overhauls of hubs. The final session will allow you to pick more topics to cover (wheel truing, etc) depending on the needs of your bike.
The course meets at the Bikes Not Bombs Bike Shop once a week for 5 weeks, and you bring your own bike to work on and improve. The cost for a full course is $100. For this tuition, you get the knowledge AND your bike gets work that would cost nearly $100 in most shops.
You need to enroll in advance – do not just show up at the first class meeting! Call Matt Coe at 617-522-0226 or email [email protected] to let us know your interest in enrollment. You can mail a check, bring it by, or pay by credit card in person or over the phone – we’ll reserve a space for you AFTER we receive payment.

The annual grassroots fundraising favorite is rolling up in November and December: help raise money and talk to some other cool supporters of BNB!
About 30 volunteers (you included) will join us to call people who love BNB, have already given to us, and need a little friendly reminder/contact to get them to give again/give more and get re-inspired about BNB’s awesome work.

3) You get to talk to lots of people who love BNB’s work. (Our favorite part.)
4) You get free snacks (or dinner, if it’s time).
5) You earn volunteer hours for your valuable time at each session!
6) You’ll meet some new BNBers, and that is always fun.
7) You’ll get to meet BNB Board members, all of whom do at least two of these phone calling shifts!
Please email [email protected] or call 617-522-0222 if you are interested and/or have any questions call/email to sign up for two or more sessions. We also need volunteers to provide food! Locations TBA.
