Massbike Spins Presents: National Train Day Ride

Written by Boston Biker on Apr 25

Got this in the email, looks like fun

————–

What: To celebrate National Train Day, we will follow the routes of parts of the Old Colony and New England Railroads south of Boston. Along the way, we will stop to look at a number of historic railroad stations and talk about the competition between the Old Colony and the New England in the years before and after the Civil War. And you may already know about Whistler’s Mother, but we’ll tell you about Whistler’s father (and uncle), too!

Today, parts of these old railroads are still used by Amtrak and the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad, but many of the branches have been abandoned, and some of them are (hopefully) in the process of being converted into bike paths. Some are even being considered for the restoration of passenger train service.

When and Where: Meet Saturday May 12, 2012, at 9:00 AM at South Station. Make sure that you leave enough time to buy your ticket and get onto the train to Walpole by 9:15!

The route is about 25 miles and most of it is pretty flat and level. We will average about 5 miles per hour, so the ride should be an easy one for most cyclists. We’ll stop to look at the stations in Walpole, Sharon, Easton, Stoughton, and Canton Junction. Many of these are by very important and famous architects. We’ll make a stop for lunch and will finish late afternoon, probably around 5:00. After the ride, we will take the train back to South Station. Helmets required. Steady rain cancels.

This is a MassBike Spins Ride

Two If By Sea Ride

Written by Boston Biker on Jul 23

MassBike is putting on this fun little ride, should be good for all ages.

MassBike Spins – Boston Ride Series: Two If By Sea Ride

Saturday, July 26, 10am from Paul Revere Landing Park in Charlestown.

Follow the East Coast Greenway route north through Charlestown, Everett, and Malden, then cut east to Revere Beach and ride south along the beach through Winthrop to Deer Island. The ride will return through East Boston, Chelsea, and Everett, with the traditional lunch stop at Constitution Beach and more bikepaths in East Boston and Chelsea.

The ride will be about 30 miles long, with every type of riding environment you can encounter in metropolitan Boston, from wide busy streets to quiet seashore paths. Helmets are required, and hybrid bikes are recommended due to bad street surfaces. A map and cue sheet will be posted on http://www.masspaths.org soon.
