Fourth Of July Open Thread
Written by Boston Biker on Jul 01Its that time once again, America proudly proclaims “YOU AIN’T GETTING THIS SHIT BACK ENGLAND!!!” with much fanfare and exploding of things (that’s how we keep those limey bastards from getting up the courage to try and retake the colonies).
How will you celebrate the fourth? Cycling picnic, cycling BBQ, cycling fireworks, cycling, riding a bicycle, having fun with bicycles, bicycle related flag displays, overhauling the bottom bracket in your bicycle…for America, or just plane bike riding?
Leave your cycling (or non-cycling, but really if you don’t cycle on the fourth the British have already won) related plans for the three day America (fuck yea!) themed weekend in the comments.

Dodging pedestrians on Memorial and Storrow drives when closed to vehicle traffic!

Biking is HANDS DOWN the best way to get into or out of the massive traffic clusterf**K that is the celebration down on the Charles. The T is jammed, the sidewalks are jammed, the streets are closed, or jammed. On a bike, you can pass jammed cars, get ahead of the pedestrians, and laugh at the crowds on the platform.

My husband, Paul & I get out our now old bike cart(our kid’s are adults now),load it up with lawn chairs and head down to the Cambridge side of the Charles to see the fireworks. We also make time for fun riding on Storrow Drive. It is a real rush riding on Storrow and Memorial Drive without cars. If only our streets could always be thus! That’s when we would see our streets be filled with bicyclers of all ages, from young kids to old people.

Great “4th.” thread !!! My girlfriend and I brought our bikes into (from Dracut) the city for the Bruins ‘Stanley Cup’ Parade, and it was awesome ! We were able to get from North Station, ALL the way to Copley Square (with stops for pics. along the way) with NO problem. Absolutely the best way to get around / see the city …

I logged about 80 miles from Fri to Mon on the bike.
Fri: Broadway from Arlington to Sullivan Sq, and back home via Memorial Drive
Sat: Stony Brook Reservation. If you haven’t explored SBR, you really should consider it.
Sun: A trip through the barren streets of Cambridge and Somerville.
Mon: Forest Hills Cemetary.
LOVE holiday weekends!
