Please Comment On Casey Overpass/Forest Hills Bike Access And Safety

Written by Boston Biker on Mar 10

got this in the email, I ride through here every single day, and every single day it sucks.

———————————————————-

Do you ride/walk/drive under or over the Casey overpass? Community meetings around the impending removal and replacement of that span are coming soon, so I’d like to use this blog post to solicit comments from JP Bikes members on how they feel about the current effectiveness and safety of that entire multi-road intersection. You are also welcome to comment on how it works as a pedestrian, driver, or transit user. Here are a few questions you can use to get started, but feel free to comment on whatever aspect of the project you want to. Use this link to the blog post to comment:

(you’ll need to join to comment. Please do! If you would really rather not, you can send your comment to me and I’ll post it)

Do you ride through this intersection regularly? What time and how frequently? From where and to where are you typically going?

In what ways have you optimized your route or your schedule to avoid traffic or other inconvenience?

Do you ride on the sidewalk at any point?

Have you found it useful to ride over the overpass?

If you are going to/coming from the Southwest Corridor path, how do you get there?

Comment on where you see the most traffic backed up

Describe specific dangerous or confusing crossings

Describe any accidents you may have had

Please stay tuned for announcements about meetings. We expect there to be a lot of talk about car traffic and flow, so to advocate for bike accommodations and safety, we need input from as many actual users of that area as possible. Thanks!

I don’t think I’ve ever ridden it, but the two times I drove it were scary- talk about overcapacity leading to extreme speeds.

I had heard someone saying fairly confidently that it was almost certain that they were going to remove the above grade road completely and have some kind of roundabout solution. Maybe I’m mis-remembering though.

Even better would be a sequence of small roundabouts around a central greenspace. Kind of like the Fens, but slower speed, I would hope.

I bike and walk under it regularly as I live nearby and often use the SW corridor for errands and commuting. I find the traffic to be obnoxious on thr ground as is, and would be horrified if the higher-speed through traffic were added. I occasionally use the sidewalk to travel on the T station side of New Washington St to the crosswalk leading onto the SW corridor, but typicaly ride in the road.

As it is, traveling through the Hyde Park side of the intersection under the underpass is challenging on a bike as it is slightly uphill from both sides, a long intersection, and a short stoplight time. I’ve often found myself still in the intersection when the light turned red even though it was green when I passed the crosswalk into the intersection.

The South St side of the station is also confusing, just due to the number of entries and stlop lights.

I rarely ride over the overpass, but have been comfortable running on the sidewalks.

I personally have no issues with the road despite the shitty conditions, and I ride more aggressively than most people, unless you are an idiot you shouldnt have any issues, right? If you are going north stick to the road, if you are going towards dedham, again stick to the road, and if you really really need to go on the sidewalk

Riding a bike on the Casey Overpass sidewalk is the best way to get thru the mess down below. No intersections, cars, buses, pedestrians. And what a view! Getting rid of the overpass will make life miserable for those on bikes going from Arboretum to Forest Hills Cemetery. Keep a bridge but use a lower, more slender design, get rid of a bunch of the supports and fix the surface streets!

    @BeantownBiker

you’ve basically described my own style of doing things.
And i also agree, despite the crappy conditions (understatement by the way) of the road, i tend to have no issues
