Whats Wrong With J-Way Drivers? Cyclist Hit and Dragged 100 Feet, Motorist Flees
Written by Boston Biker on Oct 08Be on the look out for a white dodge caravan, it stuck an elderly man today on his bicycle on the Jamaica Way and drug him 100 feet before fleeing the scene.

From the Brookline Patch.
The victim, a 65-year-old man, was struck by a van near 434 Jamaicaway around 1:08 p.m, according to Massachusetts State Police. The van reportedly left the scene immediately after the crash and the man was taken to Beth Israel Hospital with serious injuries.
This is not the first time someone in a motor vehicle has gone ape shit on the J-way you might recall than another driver nearly killed a bunch of pedestrians when he drove his car up on to the sidewalk in pursuit of a cyclist.
Lets hope the cyclist makes a recovery. Thanks for the tip Neal.

Why would a cyclist be out on the Jamaicaway? That’s a dangerous highway and in fact more folks die on that roadway than any other in Boston (except may be the Expressway or the Mass Pike)… There’s another road where nearly EVERY car that passes on it is a scofflaw. Who has ever driven 25 mph the entire length of that road?

@derp Herp..my bad
@dotrider Maybe because its a legal street for a cyclist to be on, is the road of choice somehow condone a hit and run? Me thinks your priorities might be off a bit.

Who’s to say he was riding on it? Could have been riding on the very wide sidewalk opposite the pond side (a sidewalk so wide and lightly used it seems permissible to bike on, because it’s impossible to cross the road to the bike path anyway), crossed a feeder street (Lakeview or lochstead) and got dragged by the minivan turning right onto the J-Way. Just speculating. I can picture it because it’s happened to me, except I was on the side with the bike path, crossing Perkins, and I didn’t get dragged, just wedged under the bumper.
When will the State Police start enforcing a strict speed limit on this carriage path-cum-racetrack of death?

I ride on a number of roads that many cyclists would avoid (Fresh Pond Parkway, Alewife Brook Parkway, McGrath-O’Brien Highway) but I draw the line at the J’way. Just too narrow, twisting, and fast for me to ever feel comfortable there.
(Which does not in any way condone a hit-and-run accident.)

seems one problem was that the driver was an unlicensed 16 year old:

I hope the accident victim sues the parents for negligence for leaving the car keys around for a teen to find and use. i think i saw something similar on Judge Judy and she, in her inimitable style, ripped the parents a new one.

tx espresso for the followup article.
I would also never consider riding the Jway, esp with the path right there

I, of course, think this is horrible, but @dotriderblog is right. It’s a bad idea to bike on the Jamaica Way. Yes, it’s a legal street for a cyclist to be on, but it’s also way too dangerous and there are bike paths everywhere around it. I don’t understand why any cyclist would prefer to be in dangerous traffic instead of on a safer bike path. People commonly go 40+ mph there and the lanes are really narrow.
