Bikes Lanes On Com. Ave. Meeting Tonight At Boston Public Library, Speak Out For More Bike Lanes!

Written by Boston Biker on Aug 31

There’s important meeting tonight, the City of Boston will propose installing bike lanes on Comm Ave from Kenmore to the Public Garden.

The meeting is on 8/31 at 6PM at the Boston Public Library. (THAT IS TONIGHT!!!!)

For the success of this project, it will be particularly critical to have as many project proponents as possible that live or work on the street or in the neighborhood (or commute on Commonwealth Avenue on a regular basis by bike). I have it on good authority that a certain neighborhood group is planning on opposing this bike lane. This bike lane would be a valuable addition to bicycle infrastructure in this city. If you support such a thing go and make your voice be heard!

why don’t you name the “certain neighborhood group” or the “good authority”? why should anybody believe you?

I guess you will just have to show up to the meting and find out for yourself. But I admire your strict adherence to skepticism.

Why isn’t there an email option to this “speak out meeting?” I have three jobs and would love to attend this meeting and make my voice heard, but, guess what, I have to work during the meeting. I would use this proposed bike path to help get me to two of my three jobs, but I can’t have any say apparently because this meeting was planned and announced last-minute and takes place during my (albeit, not most people’s) working hours. But isn’t that the kind of audience this path would be benefiting, those commuting bicyclists who don’t have full-time jobs and have odd hours, no car, and barely enough for a T pass (granting the fact that the T stops running at a little after midnight)? Hard-working people who don’t have the money for a car or the time to spend walking to get to each day’s meeting or work shift. or both and then some? One should not have to show up to a public workshop/meeting these days, especially with our over-burdened American work ethic, to be accepted as a valid contributed opinion. Why else would newspaper editorials exist.

After so many topics that have been of my concern, I suppose I’m finally “snapping” and fed up over this inherent badge of Getting Things Done in America, which involves a manner of conducting a shoddy business life. One that involves showing up in person to, basically, a once-in-a-lifetime event to voice an opinion in an apparently sole valid and acceptable venue. After that? No good. No longer valid. You had your chance, sort of thing. I thought there was always room for improvement in all strands of existence.

To cut back on ranting: Get with the times public officials. Get online. I don’t tweet, out of dignity, but accept my emails at these meetings. It’s a demanding world and we can’t all be everywhere at once, even when we’re just down the street.

    If it helps:

    MORE BIKE LANES!

You actually can email in your comments to [email protected]

Nicole is the cities bicycle programs coordinator. I am sure she will want to hear from you.

I was just there, and NABB (the association in question) didn’t actively oppose a bike lane, they mostly just wanted the appropriate amount of preparation done and wanted to keep bikers out of the Public Garden.

I would’ve loved to have been there but this announcement was way too late. Please keep us appraised of these sorts of events, and with a bit more notice if you can. I’m willing to fork over time to promote cycling in Boston.

    I will email Nicole, now.

i could not make it. I’m curious. Did the proposals talk about bike lines on the parallel (low(er) traffic) streets instead of Comm. Ave.? (from kenmore to the garden)?
