The Grand Bicycle Happy Smile Consipiracy

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 17

So this morning it was a bit cold, but the sun was out, the feeling was right, and the gears were moving. I had a great ride, and saw a lot of people on bikes! I thought to myself “self it is such a nice day, why not say good morning to every biker you see/pass/stop next to” I think in forward slashes…

So thats what I did. I said “good morning!” or “Morning!” or “Nice day for a ride!” or “Hi!” to every single biker. And almost all of them looked at me funny then smiled. So I think it worked…

So bikers, here is your home work. From now on, whenever you see another biker you should try and give them some small token of acknowledgment. Be it a head nod, a smile, a “howdy”, a “good morning” or a “nice bike!” Anything that lets them know they are part of a very awesome club (that being, people on bikes).

We ride bikes for a whole host of reasons, one of mine is because I don’t want to be trapped in a car completely separated from my fellow human beings. I want to see and hear nature, and I want to not have to wait in a long line of cars stopped at red lights (to the front and stop). If we all start saying hi to each other only good things can happen. Who knows maybe all the people in cars will start to feel jealous of our bike party and get out of their cars and ride with us.

Boston Bikers Unite! Or at least head nod!

Oh I’ve always done this. Especially with motorcyclists. If I’m stopped at a light with a guy/girl on a motorcycle next to me I ALWAYS start a conversation by saying something funny (in context) like, “Hey, nice bike!”

I always ask motorcyclist if they want to race…cause I think it’s funny. But I guess thats kind of mean, especially in heavy traffic, cause they always loose.

People are surprisingly distant. Like even though they are next to you on a bike they still act like you’re not there at the light. I talk to older people because they are way nicer, I try to compliment their gruppo to get ’em going etc.

This is a good idea. Even if people don’t reply well, once in a while you’ll get someone who appreciates your friendliness and their day will be brighter for it.

I do this sometimes. I should try to do it more often.

I definitely did this for the 3 three I commuted via bike living in Boston.

I just started ecostreets.net – a blog dedicated to make the streets more eco-friendly and to raise that awareness with a focus on Boston.

I’d love to do a profile on a boston biker. perhaps you? “a day in the life…’

Check out my blog, add your two cents, or three. got any story ideas for me?

i started doing this during my commutes late last year a little and got to the point where a fellow commuter would also wave and say ‘good morning’/’hello’ as we passed.

Another commuter i tried it out on did not respond until just after New Years when she gave a friendly smile and wave as we carefully passed each other on the icy path.

Building a bike community one smile & wave at a time!

    Hi
I love this SMILING Movement. I do it all the time or at least I try! I could not agree with you more. Let’s not stop with fellow bikers (although that seems to be requirement)how about drivers too. How about smiling at everyone when we ride to show the world how happy and lucky we feel and are not to be behind the wheel of a car. Want to inspire a driver to get out and ride. Show him/her what he is missing: BICYCLING BLISS!!
