The Franklin Park Kite & Bike Festival on Saturday, May 17, 11-4pm

The Emerald Series:Enjoy the Great Outdoors in Roxbury

Roxbury, MA: Join thousands of people in Boston’s backyard – Franklin Park – to celebrate the arrival of spring at the annual Franklin Park Kite & Bike Festival. Enjoy the great outdoors in Roxbury when families with kids of all ages will gather on Saturday, May 17th from 11-4pm,at the Franklin Park Playstead – a large and actively used sports area designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1886 as the crown jewel of the Emerald Necklace. Come have fun exploring or gaining mastery inkite flying, or make a kite in the park. With some luck, May 17th will be a windy warm spring day, and colorful kites of various shapes and sizeswill soar to hew heights over the
skies of Franklin Park. Kites will be available for purchase or you may make one in our on-site kite-making workshop.

For those whose who’d rather stay focused on the road, not the sky, bikes will be available to borrow, with local bike advocacy groups giving tours of the park. Boston Bikeswill be on hand to rent bikes and BikesNot Bombs will be available for any repairs that may need to be made.

After flying kites & riding bikes awhile, catch your breath and participate in interactive art making with MassART’s sparc! Artmobile, an initiative of the Center for Art and Community Partnerships at MassArt (CACP), andARCK! Art Resource Collaborative for Kids, an art program that empowers students with high-quality arts education and fosters culture and community while supporting a school’s learning objectives.

Several food trucks will be on site, but we also encourage families to bring your own picnic, or bar-b-q while in the park.Franklin Park allows outdoor grilling, so bring your hibachi to the park.

Derek Lumpkins, Executive Director of the community organization Discover Roxbury said, “The Franklin Park Kite &Bike Festival is one of my favorite springtime events. There’s nothing like seeing “children of all ages” from all throughout the city come together with family and friends to be out of doors, and fly kites on a sunny, hopefully windy, spring day. In this digital age, its great to have an event that brings people together, in person or in nature. Its great to provide opportunities for young people and families to experience recreation not tied to technology.”

Christine Poff, Executive Director of the Franklin ParkCoalition said,” This annual tradition celebrates the best of our community at play outdoors in Boston’s backyard with family and friends. Everyone is invited to participate in a variety of activities, and enjoy a personal picnic or BBQ, or snacks from our vendors.

Discover Roxbury promotes the civic engagement and economic development in Roxbury through tours and events, which leverage the neighborhood’s artistic, cultural, historic and culinary assets. The Franklin Park Coalition’s mission is to serve as a voice for Franklin Park, a 527-acre historic green space located in the geographic heart of Boston and surrounded by some of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods. We work to engage all park users and community members through advocacy programs and restoration.
