Salem Man In Critical Condition After Being Hit By Bus
Written by Boston Biker on Apr 09Rebecca sent this in to me, thanks for the heads up.
Police are probing an early morning crash in downtown Salem, where an MBTA bus hit a man on a bicycle, leaving him with serious injuries, officials said.
Philip Moran, 47, was crossing Washington Street from Federal Street around 7:20 a.m. when he was hit by the front right end of a Route 544 bus, police and MBTA officials said.
Moran, with a last known address in Salem, suffered multiple “serious trauma,” and was taken first to Salem Hospital, then to Massachusetts General Hospital by MedFlight with possibly life-threatening injuries, Salem Police Captain Brian Gilligan said.

It’s sad that because it sounds like he’s a homeless man he will not arouse much sympathy.

It is so sad, but he’s not homeless, lived nearby. He was my husbands cousin

Someone seems to have hacked this web site. When I try to go to the root page (http://BostonBiker.org), I am redirected to something called “POWWEB” which says

Thanks Debi, for giving us a “face” to this cyclist. I’m sorry about his accident. I hope he makes it.
It seems as though the cyclist was flaunting the “rules of the road “ His alleged crime? Riding in a cross walk. Two lanes of traffic were stopped, the third lane had moving traffic which is where he “made contact” (as reported by WBUR) with a bus.
I remember a while back that a bill was being introduced which would allow bicyclists to cross at a cross walk on their bikes instead of requiring them to dismount. Does anyone have any updates about that?

If he’d been walking in the crosswalk (and he may have been — we don’t know yet), he would still have been hit.

The bill H 408 had a hearing in November, but nothing has happened since.

From looking at the Salem News story and Google street view, it seems likeliest that the guy who was hit rode his bike off the sidewalk into the street in the crosswalk. The first two lanes of traffic were stopped. He rode past the second lane and was hit by the bus in the third lane. Because he was riding, he was probably going too fast to respond in time to the moving bus. Perhaps his headphones prevented him from hearing it. In any case, riding into the crosswalk with lots of traffic present was quite reckless and it’s not surprising he was hit. I hope his injuries are not permanent.

Occasionally when I have been crossing on foot a multi lane road such as Comm Ave at Naples road to go to Star Market (or has the name reverted to Shaws) to Naples Rd. or vice versa, one lane of traffic will stop to let me go, but the second lane unaware of the reason for why the other cars have stopped other than perhaps traffic congestion will keep traveling. It behooves you as the crosser not to proceed past the cars stopped for you without checking the next lane before crossing. Even if it holds up the cars that stopped for you. I think proceeding with caution would also have worked here. We all have made mistakes. Hopefully we can learn from other peoples mistakes if we are given information. I hope this man pulls through.

All the smaller train stations in France have a sign “Un train peut cacher un autre.” Meaning look BEFORE you cross EACH track.

Sad news: “Philip Moran, 47, of 72 Palmer St., Salem, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Tuesday evening [4/10], according to Salem police Capt. Thomas Griffin.” http://www.salemnews.com/local/x101444726/Man-who-was-hit-by-MBTA-bus-dies
Remind me not to let my bicycle “make contact” with an MBTA bus, as it apparently results in a broken windshield: http://salem.patch.com/articles/mbta-collision-victim-dies#photo-9528190
