As we kick off a new year of youth programs at Bikes Not Bombs, we want to take an opportunity to share with you some of the highlights and successes of the last year. Did you know that four current Youth Employees are taking our Vocational Training program? Did you know that we ran TWO new programs over the summer? Did you know that BNB has a team of youth community organizers who are getting ready to launch after-school mobile bike shops? The BNB Youth Programs OPEN HOUSE is a chance for parents, friends, teachers and supporters of our youth to see just how amazing they are. Bring a snack to share and prepare to be amazed: Friday, February 10th, 6-7:30 pm at the Hub. Sometimes the most heroic jobs are not the most glamorous! On Monday January 16, from 10am to 3pm, Bikes Not Bombs will be conducting a deep cleaning of our Hub (lots of dusting will be involved, but also scrubbing fingerprints off walls, degreasing the back corners of the kitchen, and vanquishing dirt wherever it rears its ugly head). Come help out for an hour or three. Pizza, tunes, and double volunteer credit will be provided. Please email Stephen Bosco at [email protected] if you think you might come. This rural health center in Amuru, Northern Uganda is crowded, for those who live close enough or have transportation. Many more people can’t get here, but are served by 400 traveling Village Health Workers, soon to be outfitted with bicycles through a partnership with BNB. The grant writer will help develop funding sources for this project and others.
Bikes Not Bombs is seeking an experienced grant writer on a contract basis to help us implement our foundation funding strategy for International Programs in 2012. The grant writer will assist with foundation research, develop a grant proposal submissions calendar, write grants for specific international projects and for International Programs as a whole and train International Programs staff to sustain these systems beyond the contract period. Role and Responsibilities:
Read the full description and application instructions online. Application Deadline: February 3, 2012 The International Programs Intern will support our planning and technical assistance for partners like Maya Pedal in Guatemala. (photo by Nick Doriss)
Maya Pedal is an indigenous organization in San Andres Itzapa, Guatemala, that designs, fabricates and distributes labor saving pedal-powered machines constructed from bicycles and bicycle parts. Some of these machines include maize de-grainers, maize grinders, water pumps, coffee depulpers, macadamia nut shellers, aloe shampoo blenders, and roofing tile-setting machines among others. Maya Pedal is a leading inventor of this appropriate technology and has global recognition and reach. In 2012, Bikes Not Bombs intends to provide increased support for the organizational development of Maya Pedal, and is looking for a qualified and enthusiastic intern to work with BNB International Programs to accomplish this aim. Internship Details:
View this short film for more context of Maya Pedal, and read the full internship posting online. Join the fun and excitement of organizing Bikes Not Bombs’ biggest event of the year — the Bike-A-Thon! We’re looking for a dedicated hard-working individual to take on certain responsibilites like planning rest stops along the route, coordinating exhibitors and activites at the festival, supervising volunteers, and more. Some experience with event planning or the Bike-A-Thon is a plus, but not required. Pay will be $10 per hour, and would like for someone to work March through June. See our full job posting for more information on how to apply. Corporate Sponsors are a crucial part of the Bike-A-Thon. City Feed and Supply keeps our riders fed at rest stops. Help us prepare for Bikes Not Bombs’ biggest event of the year, the Bike-A-Thon & Green Roots Festival! The event sponsorship volunteer will work closely with the Director of Grassroots Fundraising & Events and will play an important role in researching and soliciting financial and in-kind donations from local businesses. This is the perfect role for someone that has solid written and oral communication skills, familiarity with internet research, familiarity with Boston businesses and neighborhoods, and the ability to visit local companies to request and pick up donations. This is a great way to get a behind-the-scenes look into planning the Bike-A-Thon and you’ll earn volunteer credits for your time, which can be used to purchase used parts at the bike shop. This position requires 3-5 hours per week and we are looking to fill it ASAP. Hours are flexible. If you are interested, please contact Allie Hunter, Director of Grassroots Fundraising & Events, at [email protected]. Thanks!
Volunteer Videographer Needed We’re looking for an experienced videographer to create a 5-10 minute promotional video to be posted on our website and be shown at fundraising events and community presentations. We would like the video to describe our programs and show the impact of our work by highlighting several individuals in the Bikes Not Bombs community. We’d like filming to begin in late March and to take place over several sessions so the video can cover a variety of BNB programs and activities. The final product should be ready by early July. We’re looking for someone that is professional, creative, flexible and is dedicated to BNB’s mission. College students and recent graduates are encouraged to apply. You must own or have access to your own equipment, including camera, sound equipment, and editing software. This is a volunteer position, but you will earn volunteer credit for your time, which can be used to purchase used parts at the bike shop. Upon successful completion of the video, you may be eligible for up to $250 compensation, depending on the availability of funds and the quality of the final product. If you are interested in finding out more, please email Allie Hunter, Director of Grassroots Fundraising & Events, at [email protected]. |
