Written by Boston Biker on Nov 21

Got this in the email, looks like something fun to do with your fellow cyclists in the winter.

——————-

Starting December 1, 7:15-9:00pm. Break out your road bike and ride indoors with us! Free trainer ride with training videos and movies. Bring your own trainer or try one of ours. Space is limited, so please RSVP to John by emailing [email protected] or call us at 617-524-BIKE (2453).

We hope to run Indoor Trainer Nights every Thursday night until it’s warm enough to ride outside again. Take a look at our online calendar for exact dates and times or give us a call.

“until it’s warm enough to ride outside again” – pfft.

I don’t understand this whole “warm enough to ride outside again.” When is it not warm enough? People in Minneapolis ride through *their* winter.

I went to these sessions last year and more than half of the people who came were people who commute by bike, year-round. A few people came because they started biking around the city in the summer, trying to lose weight and get in better shape, and wanted to keep going in th winter in some way. So can we can the disparaging comments, please?

This may come as a shock to you “transpo” bikers, but some of us “Lances” actually do hop on a commuter bike, all year.

In the summer, we like to ride with groups because it’s social and fun. In the winter, riding your nice bike sucks – winds are higher, dressing properly for the cold at that level of exertion is a challenge, the sand and salt are murder on components which are expensive, stopping to change a flat becomes a miserable-if-not-health-endangering experience, and the sand makes for narrower roads.

So, we do things like hang out in a bike shop which has a couple of trainers and watch a video and chat and encourage each other.

come on you two, it doesn’t take a genius to realize not everyone rides though the winter.

Some people are seasonal riders. This is a fun way for people to get some exercise, even people who ride all winter.

All right . . . this was my wording, and apparently I should have said “through the winter,” so I’M SORRY, okay?

This indoor ride exists to replace the Paceline/Road Training Ride, which leaves from Ferris Wheels on Tues/Thurs mornings at 7am and will only happen if it’s above 30 degrees and not raining. So “warm enough” in this context literally means “above 30 degrees at 7am on Tues/Thurs.”
