Gahhhhhhhh (Open Thread)

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 01

Its usually right around February that I am most frustrated with the weather, this is not helping.

I did however see a lot of other cyclists this morning, so at least I am not alone.

How are you all dealing with this fantastic weather?

I don’t get upset with the weather. This is Boston, it snows, it rains, it’s sunny, its cold it’s hot. We have seasons here, might as well embrace them (at least until global warming might mess everything up).

It only snows like 20 days a year in Boston or something. Probably not even that much. Might as well enjoy it while it is hear right? Biking in the snow can be super fun!

Well, I didn’t MEAN to commute in a blizzard- it wasn’t actually snowing when I left, and I had to (ironically) pick up a parking sticker for my fiance’s car at a location that wasn’t T accessible, so I biked that far, and then I just kept going, despite the 1″ and coming down.
Don’t plan on doing that again honestly, and I wish I’d called it at Kendall before I crossed into Boston. Too many cars sliding around for my comfort.

I saw four other cyclists. one in Cambridge, and three in downtown- one of whom was tailgating me a bit- wish he’d given me a bit more space just in case. For better or for worse, no one at work really raised an eyebrow that I’d ridden in.

I took the T today but I’m hoping to bike tomorrow. Bicycling in rush hour has been miserable lately, but not because of the weather directly. The cars parked in the bike lanes plus the giant craters forming in the roadway plus the backed up traffic and no way to get around it are making it pretty awful. Hampshire St in Cambridge is almost totally impassible. The buses actually have to wait for oncoming traffic to clear in order to get anywhere. Beacon St in Somerville has some craters so big an unavoidable I’m pretty sure I can no longer have children and I think my bike is about ready to fall apart.

I don’t get upset about the weather, but I do get upset about the poor infrastructure maintenance and the irritable motorists who take offense when I ride in the car lane because the bicycle lane is obstructed or hazardous.

I really don’t mind the snow, temperature, or anything else; I’m happy to be outside and getting exercise — it’s the dangers from aggressive automobiles that concern me.

Charlie, I am with you on Beacon/Hampshire. The road northbound is atrocious. So bad I usually stay on the left side, or even the oncoming lane if no one is coming. I commuted in yesterday and the traffic was amazing. Buses, trucks, no one remembered how to drive. And one guy didn’t look while pulling out of a parking space nearly hitting me.

I’m not commuting on stormy days. Nor did I on those single digit days. But other than that I am out there. And I am entirely surprised how many people I see out there – even with less cold-weather gear than I’d like.

Yeah I am amazed by some of the other cyclists I see. Today I saw a guy with no hat or helmet and a pair of jeans and a fleece. I had about three times as many layers as him. The biggest challenge for me is the lack of space with no bike lanes and the traffic jams. But it still beats the hell out of standing around waiting for a train.

I flew to Tucson Monday, for the rest of the month.

    No, really. I did.
