Bike Parking Fail

Written by Boston Biker on Sep 16

A reader sent in this fine example of how NOT to draw bicycle business to your ice cream shop. Lets just say that a certain ice cream shop in Brighton seems to have a problem with people on bikes spending money at their store…I seem to recall at least once in my ice cream eating journeys having to move one of these ugly little planters (one doesn’t even have a tree in for Pete’s sake) so I could park my bike up to the very nice bike racks…

The funny thing is, it looks like two people are still using the racks, and they look like kids bikes, the kind of kids that will spend money at an ice cream shop, perhaps if the planters were moves two or more kids could also park there and also spend money at the ice cream shop. Business owners in this town will fight tooth and nail to keep on street parking near their shops in the hopes of drawing in business, but often forget about the wallets that pedal in instead of drive.

maybe a call to Boston Inspectional Services would help. Since the Lord Mayor is up for reelection, I guess a call to the Mayor’s hotline would get those planters out of there fast.

Are shops allowed to put planters (or signs, or furniture) on the sidewalk wherever they want? I don’t think people can put anything on the sidewalks without approval from the city.

in defense of one of my favorite ice cream shops in the boston area, i believe both the planters and racks pictures are situated in front of daniel’s bakery, the bakery next to three scoops. the rack closest to three scoops has consistently remained unobstructed, although (unsurprisingly) there always seems to be a bike or two locked up there.

Walk in and talk to the Brazilian woman who now owns Daniel’s Bakery. I’m sure she’ll be happy to keep the planter plot away from the racks. One of her employees may have been screwing up.

Those planters have been like that for at least a year…I personally have moved them before, they seem to always work there way back to the racks…

Sorry I mislead you about the location of the racks, BB. I guess I only meant “generally” in front of the ice creamery.

I live in this neighborhood & just drove past on my way home. The plants are in front of Daniel’s Bakery, not the ice cream shop. The guys who own Three Scoops are really nice people; I had a hard time believing they would have done something like this. Wish you had double-checked your source, as well.
