I Am Not Sure How To Feel About This, Sheldon Browns Old Bicycles Up For Sale

Written by Boston Biker on Nov 15

Got this email today. I, like everyone else, was very sad when Sheldon Brown died. He was a giant in the bicycle world, and was widly known for knowing more about cycling than any man should. Seems his wife and a couple old friends are selling his old bikes (he had many) on ebay and craigs list. This is a sad sad day, but might be your chance to own a bit of history.

Over the next few months, several of Sheldon Brown’s bicycles, and
numerous components, will be for sale on EBay and Craigslist. My son
Jacob and I are helping Harriet sell these items.

At this time, the first item, a Brooks Professional saddle, is for
sale on EBay. Bids have gone up to $57 so far; bidding closes at 5:17
PM EST Sunday, This item amounts to just dipping a toe into the
water — *many* more items will be for sale.

Search on to find these items (and to avoid
the many items of memorabilia related to

Generally, items of special interest, with a limited market but
likely to sell at a good price and/or easy to ship (e.g., customized
bicycles, 16-inch Greenspeed rear wheel, saddles, will go up on EBay,
and items of more general interest that will probably sell locally
(e.g., steel frames suitable to build up into fixed-gear bikes) on
Craigslist. Run-of-the-mill stuff that wouldn’t sell for much, but
can be used to build up usable bicycles, is being donated to Bikes Not Bombs.

If Interested, please keep checking at EBay and Craigslist! I’ll be
posting a message here occasionally as more items are posted.

Sheldon Brown Service And Memorial Ride

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 28

sheldon brown

There will be a Memorial Service for Sheldon this coming Sunday, March 2 at 1:30pm. It will be at the First Unitarian Society of Newton, across the street from Harris Cyclery.

Details and a map link are at http://www.harriscyclery.com

Prior to the service there will be a memorial ride starting and ending at the shop:

Meet at 10:45 AM in the parking lot behind Harris Cyclery for an informal memorial ride before the service. Departure will be at 11:00. Distance: approximately 25 miles, pace slow to moderate. The ride will go by way of Weston to Water Row in Sudbury (water level permitting!), one of Sheldon’s favorite places to ride, and will return by way of Lincoln.

Fixed gears, hub gears, whatever you’ve got, are all welcome.

Please pass the word. Sheldon Brown was a giant in the cycling world, he will be missed.

Sheldon Brown Passes

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 05

Sheldon Brown, known to many as Captn Bike, or the human bicycle encyclopedia has passed away. He will be sorely missed.

Jones Wares expresses this loss much better than I could

For anyone that hasn’t yet heard, the great bike tech guru, Sheldon Brown, passed away last night. He was THE source roadies nationwide turned to for not only bike advice, but general cool info as well. For years he was a fixture at Harris Cyclery in West Newton. His website was a hoot. He did some amazing things with the ol’ bicycle. At 63, he left too soon.

I spoke with him two weeks ago about the wool cycle wear company my sister and I recently launched. We talked about how great it is that the East coast is finally starting to catch up with the West; they returned to wool a few years ago! He had his standard witty lines and told me he still has gear from Jones Cycle Wear (though added it’s getting pretty sad looking)…a business our parents had during the 70s through early 90s. He agreed to try out some of our new Joneswares stuff, if he was able to ride in the spring; his MS was beginning to keep him off the bike. As recently as Friday night I logged on to his site for info about putting a brake on my fixed gear (I’m getting to old to be that scared going down the steep hill I live on).

Our thoughts are with his wife, Harriet, and their two kids of whom he was so proud.
