Rozzie Bikes Repair Day May 14th

Written by Boston Biker on Apr 25

Got this in the email, looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Are you good with kids?

Can you pump up a tire or oil a chain?

If so, please support Rozzie Bikes by coming to one (or both) of our spring repair days.

Rozzie Bikes is not a bike shop; we are simply a group of people who want to make biking better in Roslindale.

Rozzie Bikes began Repair Days to fill a gap left by Boston Bikes Roll-it-Forward campaign that gives refurbished bikes to those in need.  Roll-it-Forward gives away many bikes to seven and eight year-olds at housing developments throughout the City of Boston.  However, there isn’t a City program to keep these bikes in good repair – the City’s short-lived Keep-it-Rolling program was not funded this year .  Many of these bikes end up not being rideable simply because the tires go flat, the chains become rusty, or something becomes loose.  Most of these problems can easily be fixed by someone with tools, parts and some knowledge of bike repair.  But many people don’t have the tools, knowledge, or spare parts to do the work themselves.  Even more don’t have the money to pay a bike shop to make the repair.

Rozzie Bikes goes to these low-income developments and fixes bikes for free.  Any bike that comes along, gets fixed.  That is as long as we have people to do the work and the spare parts.  Our local Roslindale bike shop, Busted Knuckle Bike Shop, (152 Belgrade Ave) has provided us the spare parts that we need for the past two years.  That’s where you come in.

We need people to help organize the kids, keep track of the number of bike we repair, do ABC Quick checks, pump up tires and oil chains.  If you can do more mechanical work, great – we also need people to help repair other bike parts, especially adjusting brakes and replacing brake cables.  We repair 20-30 bikes in the three hours that we are there.  It makes a huge difference to these kids to have a bike that they can ride.

We also give away helmets, donated by the Boston Cyclist’s Union, for free to help keep kids safe at these two events.

Our repair day is:

May 14 at Archdale Development from 10:30-1:30, we set up opposite the Archdale Community Center at 120 Brookway Rd.

I hope to see you there, we really need your help this year, please let us know if you can come by emailing me at [email protected]

Roslindale Bike Day This Saturday

Written by Boston Biker on Jul 08

From the email

————

Keeping with the theme of providing local produce, products and resources for the community, the Roslindale Village Main Street Farmers’ Market will sponsor Bike Day in conjunction with RozzieBikes, Saturday, July 9th from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm in Adams Park at the intersection of Washington Street and Cummins Highway, Roslindale. The special theme day promotes the use, care and maintenance of bicycles as a viable transportation alternative. RozzieBikes is a neighborhood organization devoted to making Roslindale a better place to ride your bike by advocating for street improvements, bike parking, bike routes, bike lanes, and mixed-use paths.

Farmers’ market shoppers, families and bike enthusiasts are encouraged to ride their bike to the farmers market and have their bike parked at the bike valet stop, compliments of RozzieBikes. There will be a variety of bike-related activities including free bike repair and tune ups provided by the Boston Cyclists’ Union. RozzieBikes will also provide an assortment of information and guides on bike riding in Boston, free ankle/arm reflectors, local and regional bike maps, as well as Bike Charlie Cards which provide access to safe, secure bicycle parking at Forest Hills and Alewife MBTA stations.

A Market to Farm bike ride will leave Adams Park at the conclusion of the farmers market on July 9 at 1:30 pm and proceed to either Brookwood Farm in Canton or Allendale Farm in Brookline. Bring water, food for lunch or pick it up at the Farmer’s Market. All riders must wear a helmet.

The owners of the first 40 bikes parked at the bike valet will receive a $1 coupon, courtesy of Roslindale Village Main Street which will be good for produce purchases from the farms at the farmers’ market. The bike valet station will be a secure, supervised space at the corner of the park closest to Corinth St. Boston Cyclist Union will be collecting information from bike enthusiasts regarding their interests about new routes and paths through an interactive activity, called “Pin the Bike Lane on Boston”.

Additionally, a group bike table will provide information on several bike-related organizations including Ferris Wheels, a Jamaica Plain bicycle shop that rents, sells and specializes in multi-use bicycles, Bikes Not Bombs, an organization that promotes bicycle technology as an alternative to war and environmental destruction, Colorwheel Collection offering bike-themed children’s clothing and printed fabric and LivableStreets Alliance which promotes safe and affordable transportation and will be providing free reflector bike stickers.

Free children’s activities (recycled arts and crafts) begin at 10 AM with Kasey Appleman and free live entertainment by Patrice Monahan with her swinging bluesy-jazz vocals and tap dancing at 11 AM. Children’s activities and live entertainment are scheduled every Saturday through October 30.

Got this in the email today, if you live in the Roslindale area check them out!

winter bike ride

RozzieBikes Hosts Winter Biking Workshop Wednesday, December 10

A new Roslindale bicycling group for all ages, Rozzie Bikes, will hold its first event, “Winter Biking is Fun: Let Us Show You How”, on Wednesday evening, December 10th, at the at the Roslindale Community Center. Refreshments will be served at 7:00 p.m. and three Roslindale winter cyclists will talk about and demonstrate their winter riding tips from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Would you like to keep biking to work when it gets colder? Would you like to extend your fun rides further into this season? Do you want to know how to keep your hands and feet warm? What about riding on snow or ice?

We can be practice what we learned on Rozzie Bikes first bike ride on Saturday, December 13th at 11:00, leaving from Adams Park in the center of Roslindale Square.
After one hour and approximately five miles, the group will stop for hot beverages at a local cafe. In case of rain–even winter bikers don’t like riding in cold rain– we’ll try again on Sunday, December 14th at 1:00 p.m.

Rozzie Bikes will be organizing more events, such as a spring ride and barbecue for parents and children, an Roslindale Emerald Necklace Ride to explore the green areas in Roslindale, and a presentation to the Longfellow Neighborhood Association in March.

For more information about us or winter biking, or to join our email list, check out our web site at http://www.RozzieBikes.org or email Doug Mink.
