Local Boys Make Good, Union Foundry Rotafixer Tool

Written by Boston Biker on Jun 23

For those of you who are into fixed gear bikes you have probably at some point or another had to wrench off some horribly stuck back cog, what many don’t know is that there is an easy way to get these stuck demons off using a method called “rotafix

I have used this method many a time to get stubborn cogs (or now with this tool lock rings!) off when I was shy a chain whip, or when the chain whip just wouldn’t cut it. But now the good people at Union Foundry (a collaboration of Open Bicycle and Designer Aaron Panone) Have created the T0001 “Rotafixer” tool.

Spoke Count: Call For Artists

Written by Boston Biker on Dec 18

This from the people over at The Chorus Gallery, looks like a lot of fun, if you are of the art persuasion submit something.

We now interrupt our regularly scheduled program to bring you a fun bike art event for the whole family.

Spoke Count is a collaborative installation featuring 100+ small works about bikes by various artists. It is estimated that there currently exist over one billion bicycles in the world- this show will attempt to visualize this (growing) mass of our favorite revolutionary transport. We are inviting you, the art and cycling community, to provide us with 100 8 inch x 8 inch drawings of bicycles which we will exhibit during January 2010. Our reception will be on Sat Jan 9th, between 7-10 in the evening at Chorus Gallery in Union Sq.

We will not be picky on media or image. Your submission can be, but is not limited to, a print, photograph, digital image, made out of cut vinyl, or even a drawing. It can be your little sister on a bike, a lug, or painfully accurate drawing of 365 spokes in a pile. All that we ask is that it is of some part of a bicycle and we can mount it to the wall by two map pins.

Spoke count will be a open show for 100 lucky participants. So RSVP ASAP here, and deliver your art work by Thursday January 7th by 5pm (feel free to drop off earlier than that during Open Bicycle’s normal hours).

Simply:

– Unframed– able to be punctured and supported on a wall by a map pin.

– 8 inches x 8 inches.

– Bicycle content.

All works will be for sale and priced at $40. Doesn’t matter if you never draw or have been a finalist for the Venice Biennale, the work will be for sale at $40. Full disclosure, we will be splitting all sold work 30% gallery and 70% artist, as is our standard. But feel free to trade drawings with friends, we don’t mind.

Expect another of our exceptional receptions on the 9th– drinks, dancing, music, and lots of art to look at.

See you soon

Signed,

The management.

Bike Dirty 09 (Roller Racing For A Good Cause)

Written by Boston Biker on Jul 22

This found on the nets, good chance I will make this, pricey but for a good cause.

———-

Our good friend Chandler Delinks is putting on his second annual fundraising event for the Pan Mass Challenge this Sunday, the 26th of July, at Middlesex Lounge in Central Square. OPEN will be there with roller racing equipment and side betting, AKA “Dirty Betting,” is encouraged- proceeds will go to the PMC and cancer research.

Middlesex Lounge is graciously hosting the event and their top-notch bar and kitchen will be open for your pleasure.

A statement from Chandler;

“I hope you are ready to get your dirty biking on. Last year, the event was a major success, and it was only I, the Dirty Biker, who got dirty. This year, however, with the help of Open Bicycle and Middlesex Lounge, we are bringing Biking Dirty to the next level. It’s called Roller Racing. Google it. Get ready to do it. Fellow Dirty Bird, Beau Colburn, was kind enough to make this informational page about the event. Check it out: www.bikedirty.com In the spirit that is me, I have given you all as little notice as possible for this event. That’s how Dirty does it. Suggested Donation at the door is $20.00. You want to race? $10 suggested entry fee. You will also have the opportunity t0 place bets on racers. Dirty Gambling… I hope you can make it, and remember this: Every single penny that comes out of your pocket at this event goes right to the Jimmy Fund. 100%.”

Some serious competition will be present, the drinks will be strong, and the party will be lively. Come out and support the PMC- for, as Chandler says, “Cancer sucks.”

UPDATE: Here is a bit more “structured” information about this.

Hello Everyone!

There is a great fundraiser Sunday evening at the Middlesex Lounge that we are involved in, and would like to extend the invite for it – Openly Biking Dirty 2009! Visit the website here for the quick details – http://www.bikedirty.com/

The event is in support of The Jimmy Fund and the Pan Mass Challenge, our good pal Chandler, aka Dirty Biker, is riding the PMC for the third year in a row. Over the past few years, Chandler and his team are excellent folks, friends of ours and definitely need our support to make this years ride better than last!

Sunday night will consist of socializing, dancing and roller-racing – a little bit of something for everyone, bike or no bike! If you are not familiar with roller-racing, its pretty simple: head-to-head stationary bike races, 300m in distance, the speed and time are projected for the crowd to see – a great spectator sport and a good way to settle disputes with friends. If this sounds intimidating, it shouldn’t! The 300m seems to be the right distance for everyone, whether you race weekly or have ridden to work once in the past few years. We (Open) will be providing bicycles to race with, so don’t worry about it!

DETAILS
Where: Middlesex Lounge, 315 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge – Bar & Kitchen are open, so come with empty bellies!
Time: Sunday 7pm until the plug gets pulled.
What: Socializing, Dancing and Roller Racing – all things that get you dirty!
For: Pan Mass Challenge / The Jimmy Fund / Chandler Delinks Fundraiser

Raising $$: There is a suggested donation at the door of $20 and a suggested donation of $10 to race. There will also be side-betting, aka Dirty Betting, to help raise additional money. ALL PROCEEDS will go directly to the Jimmy Fund / PMC organization! 100%. These are suggested, not mandatory, anything contributed is better than nothing, so please don’t let the dollars scare you away!

Also, Middlesex will have the kitchen and bar OPEN, so please come with an empty stomach! They have been gracious enough to provide the space and staff for free to support this event, we would like to repay the thanks by covering their costs through food and drink – they scratch our backs, we scratch theirs…

Please email me with any questions! We hope to see you there, it will be ton of fun!

RIDE DIRTY!
Zack & Joshua

If you are unable to attend, but would like to donate to the PMC and Chandler’s race, please safely do so here.
