Last all To Submit Comments For Allston I-90 DEIR

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 07

From Livable Streets:

Are you willing to wait 22 years for your train to show up?

Now is the time to let state leaders know that we can’t afford to wait. The Allston I-90 Interchange project can transform access and mobility for all in the region right now.

Join us and submit comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Review (DEIR) by Friday, February 9Each comment becomes part of the environmental review process and helps to define the issues MassDOT must address going forward.

Here are three key points to make in your comment letter:

  • Transit should be a priority. We need West Station now, not in 22 years, as a construction mitigation measure and to ensure transit-oriented development.
  • Don’t build the viaduct. A surface option will save millions of dollars, be more practical, and maintain opportunities for multimodal connections to and from the river.
  • We need better accommodations for walking and biking along the Charles River. Check out WalkBoston’s proposal to #UnchokeTheThroat!
  • Design a network of safe, human-scaled streets in the proposed new neighborhood.

To review a longer list of talking points to include in your letter, check out our website here.

Send an email with your comments and your name and address to [email protected].us by close of business on Friday, February 9, 2018, and please cc us at [email protected]

The decisions being made over the next few months will determine whether this is a highway redesign to move cars or a truly multimodal project for people. At this critical point in the planning process, every voice counts. Act now!

Speak Up For Zoning Reform In MA!

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 01

From Livable Streets:

Did you know that the last time Massachusetts updated its zoning laws was in 1975?

We need your help today to ensure that our future includes responsible planning for great neighborhoods!

Contact Massachusetts legislators and let them know that we need zoning reform in 2018 that curbs sprawl and creates better housing choices for all.

Join us in supporting Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance’s Great Neighborhoods campaign today and make sure that the Legislature backs a comprehensive and balanced bill.

Long-overdue reforms to our state’s planning, zoning, and permitting laws will help make our neighborhoods more affordable, our downtowns more prosperous, and our communities more healthy and climate-friendly.

Will you contact your legislators right now and ask them to take action on Great Neighborhoods? It’s simple. Just use this legislator contact tool.

Share this message with three friends to have an even wider impact.

Thank you for helping us make this Day of Action a success!

3 reasons to sign up for Tour de Streets today

TourdeStreets.jpgTour de Streets is LivableStreets’ biggest fundraiser of the year, and – more importantly – it’s a ton of fun! Here are three reasons to sign up today to join us on September 9th:

  1. The location is amazing. With views of the Boston skyline, a playground, skate park and beautiful patio to enjoy live music and delicious BBQ after your ride, can you think of a better way to spend a Saturday in September?

  2. It honors lives lost to traffic crashes. Tour de Streets celebrates the life and spirit of Bob Zeeb, along with other members of our Metro Boston community whose lives have been lost to traffic crashes.

  3. It’s a great way to show your friends why you care about our streets. You can create a team and get your friends and family involved. Plus anyone who donates $25 or more gets a ticket to the BBQ!

We are excited to welcome a great group of summer interns who are contributing to important initiatives like the Emerald Network and Better Buses. Learn more about our summer staff here!

Support the omnibus road safety bill

unnamed.jpgOn June 13, members of the Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalitiontestified in support of elements of An Act to Reduce Traffic Fatalities (S1905/H2877) – an omnibus road safety bill – at the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Transportation hearing. If the bill is reported favorably by this committee, it will be sent on to the Ways and Means Committee in both the Senate and the House to determine if the Commonwealth has the means to enact such a law. Thereafter, the bill would go to a general vote, at which point your input with your local lawmakers becomes even more important. Please consider submitting written testimony in support of this bill.

Take the Sullivan Square Safe Streets Survey

Sullivan-Square-1.pngWe want to hear from you! Fill out the Sullivan Square Safe Streets survey. Employers along the Sullivan Square/Rutherford Ave corridor and transportation advocacy organizations are seeking to create safer places for walking, biking, transit and driving in the area. Fill out this survey to help us prioritize locations and safety issues – tell us which areas are most problematic and what would make your commute better! Survey link: https://goo.gl/forms/jKO5OH9ERy3kITKr1

Wins

Beacon Street Vision Zero meeting

beaconstmap_arlingtontomass-01.pngOn June 12th, the Boston Transportation Department presented their preferred design for Beacon Street in the Back Bay, a Vision Zero priority corridor. The proposed improvements include leading pedestrian intervals at crossings, removing a lane of vehicular traffic, adding a one-way parking protected bikeway, daylighting, and more.

Before June 30th, please review the plan for yourself, email [email protected] to submit feedback, and take BTD’s bike connectivity survey to advocate for improved network connections on adjacent streets. BTD will present a final design in September, and the project will hopefully be implemented before the end of 2017.

LivableStreets is working with our Vision Zero partners to deploy Street Ambassadors post-implementation to educate the public on how to properly use this new infrastructure. Interested in helping us spread the word? Reach out to Andrew at [email protected].

Silver Line “Better Bus” pilot has ended

SilverLine_BRT.jpgThank you to all of our amazing partners and Street Ambassadors who teamed up for BostonBRT‘s Silver Line Better Bus Experience. After watching bus after bus board passengers quickly and efficiently, it was clear that all-door boarding is critical to improving transit in the Boston area. LivableStreets will be reporting back on feedback and data collected during this demonstration. Also, BostonBRT will soon announce selections for its RFP process, and LivableStreets will continue to advocate for better service system-wide.

Want to see future improvements on your bus? Get involved in our Better Buses initiative, and join us for this month’s Advocacy Committee meeting on June 28th to brainstorm strategy.

5th Annual Rush Hour Challenge

Written by Boston Biker on Jun 02

From LivableStreets:

The 5th Annual Rush Hour Challenge is less than a week away! This friendly competition dares to answer the age-old question: what’s the most reliable form of transportation for getting around Boston?

This year, there will be two parts to the challenge. Participants traveling by car, bike, T, and foot will journey from Dudley Square to Faneuil Hall during the morning rush hour, and then from Faneuil Hall to Davis Square in the evening.

Please help us spread the word and share the event with your network!

Here are three ways you can participate in the Challenge on June 5th

RHC_(1).png1. Kick off your morning by cheering on the contestants at the morning finish line!

Where: Faneuil Hall Marketplace (plaza between Faneuil Hall & Quincy Market)
When: Contestants will start arriving anytime after 8:00 am
Cost: Free (complimentary coffee will be available)

Rush-Hour-Challenge_2016.jpg2. Try a new mode for your morning commute — and bring a friend! Create your own personal challenge (and tell us about it using #RHC2017).

Where: Your commute, ending at Faneuil Hall Marketplace
When: 8:00 – 9:00 am
Cost: Free (besides the cost of your transportation)

RedBones_party.PNG3. Cheer on the contestants as they reach the evening finish line and celebrate with a party!

Where: Redbones Bike Party, 55 Chester St, Davis Square, Somerville
When: 5:00 – 9:00 pm (contestants will be arriving between 5:30 and 6:30 pm)
Cost: $15 includes food, drink, a raffle ticket, and valet parking (proceeds go to MassBike and the New England Mountain Bike Association)

Rush Hour Challenge is meant to highlight Metro Boston’s rapidly growing need for better and more diverse transportation options. Each of the participants will face the hectic and often dangerous traffic conditions, confusing intersections, and disconnected networks Bostonians experience every day. We’re excited to be partnering again with the Somerville Bike Committee, Boston Cyclists Union and MassBike for the Challenge.

We have an awesome line up of Challenge participants, and we’ll be announcing who they are via social media over the next few days, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

We hope to see you on June 5th
