Work For Indy Fab

Posted June 10th, 2009 by Boston Biker

Saw this on the intertubes…if you want to start building frames this might be a way to get your foot in the door.

—–

IF has a rare opening for an entry level position. Come join our merry band of frame-building pirates and learn from the inside. The current need is for someone to support the paint function, primarily blasting and sanding frames, but everyone at IF is flexible and rolls where there is need, and if you are motivated, you can learn all the skills that you need to build frames.

The job pays survivable wages (barely), but offers full health and dental benefits after a probationary period, along with a fun and flexible work environment.

If you are a dependable, high integrity person that knows how to laugh and is eager to learn, send your info to either gary@ifbikes.com or lloyd@ifbikes.com.

Frame Discounts For Photographers!

Posted May 18th, 2009 by Boston Biker

Over at the Budd Bikes Works Blog, Budd is offering the following deal. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

—–

I need some glossy, pretty, studio quality pictures of my frames, complete bikes, and shop action. I have to concede that I am inept at capturing what I see through a lens.

If you are a budding Avedon looking for subject matter and in need(want) of a one of a kind, high performance custom frame, please get in touch with me, we can talk turkey about a discount over ping pong.

My commute, in pictures

Posted May 13th, 2009 by huffypuffy

Ever since I’ve added Claritin to my midnight routine, I now consider my commute to be among the best in America.  Driving would take fifteen minutes; it takes twenty-five if biking briskly.

1washington bridge washington bridge 2

Views from the recently (re)opened Washington Bridge sidewalk.  It’s a bit tight for two-way traffic, but I think I’m leaving early enough to not run into anybody coming the other (normal) direction.

path 1

Moving shot from the East Bay Bike Path, a path that only kinda sorta follows the main road.  Yay rails-to-trails!

And views from further down the path into the lagoon zone:

path 2  path 3

And perhaps the best part is the return:  catching and passing dudes on carbon fiber bikes on my beater with my tie flapping in my wake.  Unfortunately, too tired to snap those photos.

Bike Mechanic Needed! Get Paid To Build Bikes

Posted May 13th, 2009 by Boston Biker

Know your way around a bike, have some past mechanical experience? Then check this out.

Mechanic needed to work 25- 30 hours a week, some weeks more, and some weeks less. As the mechanic is not dealing with customers flex time is not a problem as long as the work gets done in a timely manner. Pay starts at $10 an hour, after a moth it goes up to $12. If this individual works out, they can expect a trip to the Netherlands and Denmark to get trained at the various factories. A pretty nice perk as they will be staying in Copenhagen, Dieren and Amsterdam!

The person needs to be mature, creative, able to work outside the box and with others. He/she also must either be in college or have a college degree.

Trespassing

Posted May 3rd, 2009 by huffypuffy

Very excited about my commute to my new temp job:  four-and-a-half miles along shoreline, then a mad dash trespassing shortcut across a members-only country club to get to a 50-ft climb into work.  I think a pool is in order:  how soon will I get banned?  (I start May 11).  Question:  will I get banned more quickly wearing a cycling kit or a doctor outfit?  Or TWEED?

This is also the first time I have biked a significant distance (>3 miles) to a job at which I have to be dressed nicely.  Decisions to make (interim decisions in bold):
1) Bike:  Road bike speedy overkill?  Beater undercranked unstealability?  Slick-shod hardtail?
2) Shoes:  Cheap but acceptable loafers with flats/loops?  MTB SPDs?  Race SPD-SLs?  Dress shoes?
3) Clothing:  Wear tie and mentally suppress sweat?  Dress in gym stuff and change at work?

I’ve been told there are bike racks at work.  Unfortunately, I got kicked out by staff on Saturday while biking around the facility looking for them.  This may spawn an interesting series of events.

I hope I get a locker.

1st Day at Metro Ped (Metropolitian Pedal Power formally known as New Amsterdam Project)

Posted November 14th, 2008 by Pugatch

I started my first day as a cargo bicycle messenger and it was amazing. Despite the fact I had next to no sleep due to a neighbor’s house being on fire last night and 11 fire engines keeping me awake, I rode with full energy, and as this horrible cell phone shot shows… glee.

Glee

It was a hot rainy day (low 60s) and I was prepared for colder than that, decked out in wool socks, wool base layer shirt, wool jersey, raincoat, rain pants, doc martens… I dropped some layers before going out for my route.  When I first got there, I met Sarah who taught me how to ride the trike, its a 250lb 3 wheeler with electric assist, 8 gears, and holds a lot of cargo (we had 15 tubs the size of recycling bins.)  I then met Joe who led me around Charlestown and we met up with the Boston Organics guys who contract with us. We picked up 15 bins of organic veggies and fruits and then made our deliveries in Charlestown and Somerville. I loved every second of it, and can’t imagine not doing this for a long long time.

Everyone I met afterwards at the staff meeting was really awesome and lots of invites to hangout. So here it is. I have an awesome bicycle mechanic job with awesome people I love for the Spring/Summer/Fall and now an awesome bicycle messenger job for the winter (and hopefully year round in addition to the bike shop) with awesome people.

This photo is blurry but you get the idea of the trike…
