Volunteer For Somerville Event, Ride Your Bike, Get In Free!

Written by Boston Biker on Sep 11

got this in the email, great way to trade some bike hauling for free entry especially if you like food…which what cyclist doesn’t?!

Unleash your inner bike messenger!

The East Somerville Main Streets Foodie Crawl is an amazing event – over a dozen restaurants up and down Broadway are opening their doors in a massive “open house” tasting party.  The event is on September 18th from 6 to 8 PM and we are expecting a big crowd.

I am organizing the volunteers – since the restaurant route is about a half-mile, I know the easiest way to get around these short distances is by bike.  So I’m recruiting 4 “runners” who can help move things around.

If you are interested in taking a shift, they are from 4:30-6, 5:30-7, and 7 to 8:30.  You’ll need helmet, front and rear lights, and a messenger bag or pannier.  You’ll get a volunteer t-shirt and free admission to the rest of the event.

Please contact me directly at [email protected] if you are interested. And tell your friends – it’s a great event and a great deal – just $25 and it includes a dessert after-party.

Get Your Grub On Classy Eddy Merckx Style

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 27

Got this in the email, I do believe that we cyclists have officially become very important people. Seriously this is some very classy cyclists themed food. It’s not what I would call cheap, but hey all that money you save on gas has to go someplace.

Le Tour de France—Bistro Style
Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro Offers Culinary Tour Around France

WHAT: Beginning in late February 2012, Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro (BHHB) is taking its affinity for French cuisine and bicycling further than ever, with its culinary “Le Tour de France — Bistro Style.” Every Monday through Thursday, the Beacon Hill Hotel & Bistro will offer dinner guests a special prix fixe menu showcasing the cuisine of particular region in France, with references to a specific Tour de France rider and highlights from the stage which occurred in that region. This year’s Tour will focus on the exploits of the legendary Eddy Merckx. The menu will change every two weeks and offer diners the choice of a two-course menu for $33.00 or a three-course menu for $39.00 (tax and gratuity not included), in addition to the regular menu. This event, Le Tour de France — Bistro Style, will run through July 2012, when the actual Tour de France takes place. As the weather turns warmer, diners will be welcome to turn out in their bicycle regalia, if they so wish. But blood doping and other performance enhancers are definitely prohibited. Vive la France!

Our Tour begins in the South. Between February 20th, 2012 and March 1st, 2012, diners will enjoy the cuisine of the Rhône Valley: house-made sausage and potatoes, monkfish with brown butter and mushrooms and lemon meringue tart. When the menu will move northeast to the Alsace from March 5th, 2012 to March 15th, 2012, diners will indulge on a torchon of foie gras with spiced bread and cranberry compote, warm sauerkraut with house-made sausage and meats and a cheese cake a la Francaise! Subsequently, the menu will change every two weeks with the destinations subject to the whims of the Bistro! Optional wine pairing for each region will of course be available. Do not miss this opportunity to try the very best in regional haute cuisine and to take your taste buds on a ride around France.

Guys,
I’m having my annual Open House/BBQ on Sat May 16th from 4pm until later. We’re going to have a bunch of free beer, and also veggie burgers, and pizza from Upper Crust. All are welcome! Also, I’m going to try to get Bold Sprints going on in the evening if Brandon C is nice enough to let us use them. Hope to see you all there! Thanks!

PI(e) Day Ride

Written by Boston Biker on Mar 02

Got this from MassBike. Bikes, math and pie can’t go wrong here.

Pi(e) Day Bike Ride: March 14, 2009 (3/14)

If there is one thing that we’ve learned through rigorous scientific study here at MassBike, it’s that bicyclists love their pi(e). Be it the quintessential numerical misfit or the flaky, delicious treat. To celebrate our fascination with mathematics and dessert, we’ll be going for a pleasant, afternoon bike ride. Let your inner geekiness and hunger out for a short ride on Saturday, March 14th. Plan to meet in Boston Common near the Brewer Fountain (corner of Park and Tremont) at 12:45pm. We’ll go in plenty of circles and end with some delicious pie. Petsi Pie in Somerville will be giving out free small pies starting at 1:59. They’ll also give you a 10% discount for every 10 digits of pi you can recite. That’s right, 100 digits means a free pie. And you thought all that memorization as a kid was never going to get you anything! Led my Massbike’s own Shane and James. Extreme weather will cancel. RSVP to [email protected].

Here’s a head start on your free-pie pi memorization: 3.1415926…

Ride To Haymarket With DotBike

Written by Boston Biker on Aug 25

DotBike has done it again with another sweet food themed ride, I suggest you all check it out.

Saturday morning ride to the Haymarket: A vitaminised journey

When: Saturday August 30th from 9 AM to 11 AM

Where: Ride from Ashmont to the Haymarket and back along Dorchester Ave.

Join veteran cheapskates Vivian and Elisa on their quest to get the cheapest fruits and vegetable in town. For those who are not familiar with it, every Friday and Saturday a discounted produce market takes place in the Haymarket square area of downtown Boston. Fruits and vegetables are sold in outdoor stands at a fraction of what you’d pay for them at the supermarket.

They come by the full pallets from the Chelsea warehouses that supply many of Boston’s supermarkets and grocery stores. The quality can vary, but by choosing carefully, one can get enough fruits and vegetables for two weeks for under $20! It can be loud, crowded and a bit unpolished, but that’s part of the charm of the place. And nowhere else in town you will see such a diverse crowd in one location.

More info about the haymarket

We will meet in front of Ashmont Grill at 555 Talbot Ave. (intersection of Dorchester Ave. and Talbot Ave.) at 9:00 AM. If your bike needs a minor tune-up, you can show up 15 minutes early (8:45) and we’ll try to address that. We will ride on Dorchester Ave. at a leisurely pace and take a more scenic route once we get downtown. We should arrive around 9:45. We’ll take about 30 minutes for shopping and relaxing and head-back around 10:15, to beback in Ashmont around 11:00. It’s about 6 miles each way. You can also join at any point along the route by calling Vivian ahead of time at 617 290 5822.

Don’t forget your big backpack or a bungee cord if you have a bike rack (there are plenty of empty discarded cardboard boxes to be found to pack your fruits).

What if it rains? they’ll cancel and do it another weekend.

For info, contact Vivian at [email protected] or 617 290 5822

And keep an eye on the event calendar at www.dotbike.org for other upcoming rides and events like our next commute ride home on September 10th and the Hub on Wheels ride on September 21st – register to ride as part of the DotBike team.
