Ayanna Pressley To Hold Hearing On Safeguarding Cyclists, Introduces New Draft Legislation For Side Guards On Trucks

Written by Boston Biker on Oct 21

Got this in the email, Ayanna Pressley has been diligently working to ensure safer conditions for cyclists in Boston, here is her latest, welcome effort.

————-

In conjunction with Mayor Martin J. Walsh, City Councilor Ayanna Pressley has recently authored an ordinance titled An Ordinance Requiring City Vendors to Safeguard Unprotected Road Users. This ordinance would require all city-owned and city-contracted large trucks to install lateral protective devices (“side guards”) as well as make improvements to visibility/mirrors and safety decals.
The City Council’s Committee on Government Operations (chaired by Councilor Michael Flaherty) will be hosting a hearing on this proposal next Tuesday October 28, 2014 at 4pm in the City Council’s Ianella Chambers (5th Floor of City Hall). If you would be interested in testifying, please contact James Sutherland <[email protected]>.

Invitation To A Boston City Council Briefing On Bicycling Safety

Written by Boston Biker on Apr 30

Got this in the email, if anyone has some free time might be worth checking out.

————————————-

City Council Briefing on Harvard School of Public Health Student Recommendations for Bicycling Safety Improvements
Wednesday, May 1st
10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Boston City Hall, 5th floor, Curley Room

Each Spring, the Harvard School of Public Health has a “Spring Challenge” where students are tasked with developing policy proposals for an issue facing the City. This semester, the students chose bicycling safety. Students have spent the last few weeks meeting with Boston Bikes, the Cyclists Union, and public safety officials in order to develop timely and usable policy proposals to improve bicycling safety in Boston.

We are honored to have the winning students from the Spring Challenge present their ideas to the Boston City Council on how we can accelerate our bicycling infrastructure and safety programs. If you have any questions please contact James Sutherland at 617-635-4217.

Please join us, our colleagues on the Boston City Council, as well as representatives from the administration. I hope to see you next Wednesday.

All the best,

Ayanna

Ok This Has To Stop

Written by Boston Biker on Mar 04

Inspired by the outcome of Grimlock’s fight against MBTA drivers who run red lights I have decided to take on city hall! Or well the part of Cambridge street as it comes up the hill in front of city hall.

View cambridge street double parking in a larger map

This morning I was almost killed by a double parker exiting their vehicle (which was double pared WAAAAY out into the street). Which got me to thinking, why exactly do so many people get to double park, a mere stones throw from city hall…? As anyone who drives up that street will tell you, every single morning there is a rash of people parking, standing, dropping off, or picking up, on the part of Cambridge street that curves around to the right near city hall, none of it legal.

I called city hall today to ask about what they were going to do, I was told that they already heavily enforce that area, and as such there are NO double parkers there…to which I replied, “you are wrong, there are a rash of double parkers there every day all day long.” The lady on the phone assured me that they were taking care of the problem. I guess they are going to need a bit more encouragement, over the next couple days I will be documenting the many many double parkers on that street.

If you would like to complain about this issue, drop city hall a call at 617-635-4500
