Coffee + Bikes = Art

Written by Boston Biker on Dec 16

Got this in the email, I know this lady, she is a great artist, you should go check out her stuff.

—————————-

whose legs of coffee are these???

Five large pieces hung at Equal Exchange Cafe all represent my recent photo-based work that I’ve completed with used coffee grinds supplied by the Equal Exchange Cafe. The grinds were dried, applied to artboard, then photographed, printed, and framed.

The frames are made of used pallets, burlap coffee bags and discarded bicycle chain links. They are just as awesome in reality as they appear in the photos.

Complete spectrum of the work can be previewed on my website: CLICKETY-CLICK. But what you should really do is take a brisk little walk in the North End and visit the coffee shop that conducts its business in a sustainable, conscious and tasty fashion. And is supportive of emerging artists.

To make it really REALLY easy for you, here’s the address: 226 Causeway, Boston. It’s right past North Station.

I would like to thank everybody who came out to the opening and encourage everyone to come check it out and tell your friends!! Also, my friend and fellow artist Jennifer O’Donnell is responsible for all the pretty signage there – so good!

Peace,

N

The Path Less Pedaled

Written by Boston Biker on Oct 29

I had the great fortune to listen to Russ and Laura from the famous Path Less Pedaled blog talk about their adventures traveling across the country by bike (hosted by the super awesome Bikes Not Bombs).

The interesting thing about their trip is that they didn’t have a set time frame. In fact they sold everything they owned and just sort of took off. Planning a day in advance, taking life as it came, enjoying it along the way. True adventure style. I have been itching to get on a bike point in a direction (most likely not east) and just go…these people actually did it.

I was impressed that the rigors of the road have left them with a more joyous attitude rather than having it beat them down. As anyone who has worked retail can tell you, people are not always that nice…but that’s not what Russ and Laura found.

They relied upon the kindness of strangers and the strangers came through for them. Providing food, water, even a house to stay in when they were sick and tired and needed a place to rest. Its enough to make a cranky Bostonian wonder if perhaps the fabled north east grump might not be all its cracked up to be.

Another thing (at least from my point of view) is that Laura, like me, is in the business of making very nice head badges for bicycles(and other awesome stuff). It was great hearing about how being on the road influences what tools she uses, and how she makes her art. It was also great hearing about Russ and his photographic adventures.

I think that these two inspired me so much because their lives and dreams parallel mine so closely. They like bikes, I like bikes. They make art, I make art. They are internet geeks, I am an internet geek. They sold everything and went on an amazing epic adventures across the US, I…umm well I am still working on that part.

You should check out their site, and buy their stuff, and support them, because they are awesome.

Aww Shucks, Nice Write Up About My Headbadges

Written by Boston Biker on Feb 11

I like to fiddle around with metal, occasionally making some head badges. The nice author of Lovely Bicycle, has been kind enough to write up a nice post about my work.

After looking around a bit, I discovered that Boston Biker is a metal worker and makes splendid bicycle headbadges.

What I like about Boston Biker’s work is that it is artisanal: every badge is hand made, which I think is a good match for the “expressionist woodcut” style logo I have chosen. In the course of making arrangements with him to create my headbadge we also discussed the process itself, and I paraphrase it here in case others are curious how this works.

Thanks!

At some point I am going to put up some of my creations in the shop, but until then, if you are interested in a head badge, contact me. I also do other assorted bike jewelry/stuff with metal.
