JP Bikes Spring Roll

They are doing it again this year!

Spring Roll! Spring Roll! SPRING ROLL!!!

(okay you get the idea). Looks like the rain will break in time for Sunday finally, if not earlier. So get back out on some dry pavement and follow me and the stereo-bike around the neighborhood with a whole bunch of your cycling neighbors. So that’s THIS SUNDAY at 10am at the shiny new South Street Mall at South and Carolina. Ride leaves promptly at 11, but please come early for bike decorating and general merriment. Spread the word with our Facebook event page.

And don’t forget to join the JP convoy this Friday morning for a group ride downtown to the Mayor’s Bike Friday celebration at City Hall. The ride leaves Curtis Hall at 7:00 am, and picks up others near Hyde Sq (Centre and Boylston) at 7:10 am. Free burritos and coffee! Rain or shine, hopefully the latter. Register and more details at www.bikefridays.org.

On Saturday the 21st from 2-5, join our friends at DotBike for their “Future Dorchester Coast Trail Ride”. Take a ride to see the possible routes to connect the Neponset Greenway to the Harborwalk and hear about the results of research done in the area by Tufts graduate students this spring. Bike helmets required. Co-sponsored by Boston Cyclists Union, BNAN, and DotBike. Meet at playground sunshelter, Pope John Paul II Park, Gallivan Blvd.

On Wednesday the 25th from 6-7:30pm, join Discover Roxbury on their “Radical Roxbury” bike tour. This tour follows up State Representative Gloria Fox’s lecture on May 18 on Roxbury’s history of “radical” politics in the mid-20th century. We’ll begin at Roxbury Crossing with the relatively well-known protests against the construction of I-95 along the Southwest Corridor. From there our attention will focus on mid-20th century revolutionary leaders Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X. After passing the former locations of the Black Panthers and SNCC, we’ll end with an overview of the 1967 and 1968 riots in Grove Hall and the police staging grounds in Franklin Park. Tie dyed t-shirt and and Afro pic are optional. Details and tickets available at www.discoverroxbury.org.

Ride Of Silence 2011

Written by Boston Biker on May 13

More from MassBike

————————–

Upcoming Ride Of Silence To Raise Bike Safety Awareness

MassBike will lead the Boston-area Ride of Silence on Wednesday, May 18, 2011, one of hundreds of such rides taking place worldwide in memory of bicyclists killed or injured while riding on public roads. The ride occurs during Bay State Bike Week, the statewide celebration of bicycling. We’ve seen lots of you riding this spring, and we urge as many of you as possible to attend this important ride. We need to send a strong message to the public that bicyclist safety on the roads is an important issue that affects many people. Let us know if you plan to attend by RSVPing to [email protected].

The idea of the Ride of Silence is to draw attention to the human toll caused by roads that are poorly designed for bicycling and by motorists who fail to drive safely around bicyclists. While biking remains a generally safe mode of travel, it is still important to note that we bicyclists do have significant vulnerabilities that may not be recognized or fully appreciated by the general public, and motorists in particular. This ride highlights the fact that as gas prices rise and more people take to the streets on two wheels, we all need to slow down a little and exercise good judgment.

The ride will depart Seven Hills Park behind the Davis Square MBTA Station in Somerville at 7pm (plan to arrive no later than 6:45pm so we can depart promptly), then make its way through Cambridge to Boston where it will conclude at the Charles Street entrance to the Boston Common. The six-mile ride will take place in total silence, at a slow pace, with only signs worn by the riders to explain the purpose of the ride. The route intentionally takes busy streets in order to draw the greatest amount of attention, though the riders take care to follow the law and minimize interference with motor vehicle traffic.

The ride will conclude with brief remarks at Boston Common. If you would like the name of a friend or relative who has been killed or injured in a bike crash to be read aloud, please notify us at [email protected]. Also, if you would like to say a few words at the end of the ride, we welcome your thoughts.

In addition to the Boston-area ride, there are rides in Leominster and Worcester. Check our calendar or the Ride of Silence website for details.

MassBike has led this ride for several years, and the opportunity to ride silently and think about those whose lives have been changed or ended because of a bike crash, and everyone we’re trying to protect by raising public awareness and advocating for better roads, has always proven to be meaningful. Please take some time to join us for this very important event.

Dorchester Pub Crank

Written by Boston Biker on May 12

Got this in the email, looks like a fun time. More info here.

————————

Adding to the amazing bike affinity and hipness of Dorchester… We received an anonymous tip that the first ever Dorchester Pub Crank will be held Sunday May 15th, starting at 5 pm. After an extensive web-search for the term “pub crank” we are also claiming it to be the first ever pub crank in the world. Our understanding is that a pub crank is like a pub crawl, but the participants ride (responsibly) on bikes from one establishment to the next.

It begins at the Banshee (934 Dorchester Ave.), and then continues on to Savin Bar and Kitchen, Harp & Bard, dbar, Blaney Stone, Centre Bar, The Ledge, Tavolo, and concludes (probably pretty late) at the Ashmont Grill.

There are important rules that must be followed:
Participants are disqualified for:
a. Being hit by a car
b. Crashing
c. Not having at least 3 drinks
