This Could Be Boston, This Should Be Boston

Groningen: The World’s Cycling City from Streetfilms on Vimeo.

This is basically the same sort of set up we have here, constrained city area (we are on a peninsula instead of surrounded by walls, but same thing), lots of students, poor city to drive in…just look at that place!  Something to dream about, and work towards.

So many of these ideas could be picked up and placed down with little to no modification to fit our system.  WE COULD AND SHOULD DO THIS!

Thanks Ron for the tip.

Weather is a bit different, though – summers are much milder, and winters aren’t as snowy, although it does get cold there.

Boston’s climate is more similar to places like Oslo or Stockholm – although both of those cities still have more impressive bike mode share than us.

Last winter I tracked the weather for Groningen because My husband and I plan to move there in a few years. It got just as cold as Boston and just as windy. It got down to the teens farenheit also. The snow accumulations were not as great. When it snowed, the bikeways were cleared immediately of snow and salted before the roads for cars were cleared of snow. It is not the weather or hills that keep people from cycling but the bicycle infrastructure.

And here is a link for more Streetfilms for the Netherlands. Check out the one for Amsterdam!
