Palace Road Sharrows Installed

Written by Boston Biker on Dec 17

Got this report, anyone got pictures?

Sharrows have been installed from Longwood Avenue to The Fenway on Palace
Road in the Longwood Medical Area. One hopes the promised Brookline Avenue
lanes and sharrows will soon follow suit.

They’ve been there about a month now, here’s a pic:

This is just silly. It connects one road that is too dangerous for bikes to another road too dangerous for bikes. The LMA has got to be one of the worst places in the city for bikes and this isn’t really helping anything.

What they really need are safe, protected ways to enter/leave the LMA – from the Orange Line bike path, the end of the Jamaicaway bike path at Huntington Ave and from the end of the Riverway bike path at the Sears Rotary.

While I jockey my way through dangerous traffic twice a day, I have tons of coworkers who say “I’ve tried riding to work, but I value my life too much to do it again” or “I love riding in my neighborhood/the suburbs, but it’s a suicide mission around here” Or my personal favorite “I rode to work pretty consistently until I got hit”

I have 9 miles each way of beautiful paths, trails and quiet roads and one mile of craziness. I have managed to find a less dangerous route throught the LMA, but it requires walking my bike through certain sections, which I know is heresy to most bikers… This is an area that will only see benefits from devoting protected paths for bikers, (the Brookline sharrows are as ridiculous as the Palace Rd sharrows) it’s too bad that the political will isn’t there.

Kate, what is your somewhat-less-dangerous route through that area?

I actually use Palace Road daily for my commute. I think it’s good that the sharrows are there as there are many parents stopping to drop off kids and they often run across the street without looking, along with all the usual LMA foot traffic. To me, it’s better than staying on Longwood.

I don’t see what the “sharrows” are supposed to accomplish on Palace Rd. Are they to remind drivers that they should patiently drive behind a cyclist instead of impatiently and dangerously try to squeeze past on that narrow short street? If the driver wasn’t that smart to begin with, I doubt he’ll be convinced.
