This Looks Interesting, Also USE A LIGHT!

Written by Boston Biker on Oct 27

Dear everyone, lights, use em. Especially not that its getting darker sooner. For reals, I can’t even see you and I am on the bike right behind you. This goes for late night joggers/pedestrians as well. You don’t have to get a light up backpack, but please, LIGHTS!

    Can’t agree more.

A headlight is the most important one. Cars coming from behind or ahead will be shining their lights on you, so they can see you pretty well, especially if you have any reflectors. It’s cars coming from side streets or at an angle where you have a problem.

A head light lets someone pulling out of a side street know that you are there, and you are otherwise invisible since their lights are pointed away from you.

I see too many people with just a blinky taillight and no head light.

Spoke lights are nice to have too. They grab attention and are even harder to miss among the background lights than a headlight.

I am going to get a rechargeable headlight for this winter. I have a 1 watt AA headlight right now, and it goes dim way too fast when I use it on the highest setting. There are some freakishly powerful rechargeable lights out there. I really only need it to last for an hour on my way home, so I can run them at their highest setting and be about as bright as a car headlight.

Blinking headlight during the day too – so that oncoming car making a turn sees you coming. Oh, and ditch those headphones…

Someone really needs to coordinate a group buy between the regional bike orgs & bike shops to get a low cost bottle dynamo + bracket + head & tail light combo to be distributed/sold in metro-Boston. Even widely distributing the Reel-Lights would be very helpful.

I see way too many people with semi-useless 1 LED Knogs or cheap blinkies with near dead/dead batteries aimed at the ground. And that’s without counting all the ninjas which I don’t see because of their lack of lights!

Then there are the Ninja cyclists. Yes, black is the new black, but it is also invisible except in full daylight. You may feel like a tragic NYC hipster / artist, but don’t dress like one unless you want to end it all while biking.
