Dear People Of Boston

Written by Boston Biker on Jul 17

I would just like to thank you all for looking so good lately. I mean this in the most glorious and complimentary way, I am going to get hit by a car staring at all of you. Way to go city, way to go.

Get out there folks, all manner of amazing people watching is to be had, no matter what style of people watching you care to do. My favorite spots are down town for the business casual, harvard square for the beautiful and rich (seriously these people all had good dental plans). What are your favorite people watching spots to ride your bike to and relax?

Revere Beach. Not a town I want to live in, but an easy T-ride. I take my bike right onto the beach, standing up, locked next to my towel where I lie down, and where I can easily keep an eye on it while swimming. I do a bit of people watching at the passers-by, although I do tend to doze off (hence locking my bike even though it is 1 foot away from me).

Later, when I ride along the boardwalk up to Kelly’s to get a clam roll, or over to Kell’s Kreme for a Sundae, the people watching is even better. It’s really nice to ride a bike in the evening along the boardwalk, and fun to play “dodge-em” with the meandering masses, who stagger along, oblivious to my approach.

Then I ride away to Point of Pines, where I see few people as I tool along the side streets and the beachfront road alongside the “Private Beach, Members Only” warning signs. I stop a few times on my way back to take photos of the surf and the wind-sailors, who congregate when the evening sea breeze kicks in.

Then, back to my home in the trees, near another favorite people-watching place: Hyde Park Ave. Having only recently moved to the area, I had no idea that Hyde Park Ave. (along with American Legion Highway) have become racetracks not only for the average man-in-a-hurry, but for motorcyclists, who routinely do high-stepping, high-speed wheelies. I’ve witnessed 4 or 5 in the 2 months or so I’ve been here. I used to ride my own motorcycle, so I understand the thrill of speed. But that’s just another reason why, until there are bicycle lanes on Hyde Park Ave., I will ride on the sidewalks or through the side streets of the Bourne neighborhood.
