Cyclist Hit In Cambridge

Written by Boston Biker on Oct 22

VIA Universal Hub:

From twitter:

“Bicyclist transported to the hospital w/ serious injuries after she was struck by a truck making a right turn”

More if I get updates.

Dear drivers, please check your mirrors before making turns, even right ones. In the same way you wouldn’t make a left hand turn across multiple lanes without looking behind you, imagine that the right hand space between you and the curb is another lane. Often filled with cyclists.

EDIT: Got this report

“fuck fuck fuck. cyclist vs. tractor trailer at windsor and main in cambridge. didn’t see a bike but saw a silver and green lazer style helmet behind the tape. detectives there”

Parked on Windsor for drinks at cuchi cuchi, lights & tape everywhere and the cops washing a mess of blood off the street. Not exciting. I hope he or she pulls through. Glad to see someone posting this, keep us updated!.

according to the boston.com article it was another rogue ‘robot vehicle’

how does a vehicle hit another person? is anyone operating the vehicle? did the truck turn right on an intersection all by itself?

FTA “woman, who is in her mid-20s, was pedaling up Main Street at about 4:15 p.m. when a box truck turned right onto Windsor Street and hit her, said Dan Riviello, a Cambridge Police Department spokesman.”

I guess that passing on the right law that is enacted in Mass, had no bearing on this accident… Question is, Did the box truck passer her then turn? or did she come up on slow traffic and attempt to pass on the right? which is legal but not the smartest thing to do IMHO. Who looks behind when turning left? Do cyclist? Changing lanes is different then turning, lane changes the main direction is still forward, Roads are designed for turns to the right from the far right and turns to the left for the far left, unless marked.. throw a monkey wrench in it, like the pass on the right law and things like this happen… I’m sure this will be the same as all hit cyclist posts… bad car..bad car.. never a proper analysis of why it happened and what can be done to prevent it.. notice the comments … who’s driving these truck… never who’s riding these bikes…

so many drivers are on cell phones these days and don’t look or signal that it would not surprise me if that were the cause.
