MassBike Spins Presents:

3rd Annual National Train Day Ride

What: To celebrate National Train Day, we will follow the routes of parts of the old Eastern and Boston & Maine Railroads north of Boston.  Along the way, we will stop to look at a number of historic railroad stations and talk about the competition between the Eastern and the B & M in the years before and after the Civil War.

Today, parts of these old railroads are still used by Amtrak and the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad, but many of the branches have been abandoned, and some of them are (hopefully) in the process of being converted into bike paths.  Some are even being considered for the restoration of passenger train service.

When and Where: Meet Saturday May 7, 2011, 2009 at 9:45 AM at North Station.  Make sure that you leave enough time to buy your ticket and get onto the train to Beverly Farms by 10:15!

The route is 30 miles and most of it is pretty flat and level.  We will average about 5 miles per hour, so the ride should be an easy one for most cyclists.  We’ll stop to look a the stations in Beverly Farms, Pride’s Crossing, Beverly, Danvers Junction, Swampscott, Saugus, Cliftondale, Malden, and Park Street in Medford, and you will get a chance to ride parts of the proposed bike paths in Danvers and Saugus.  We’ll also make a stop for lunch in Danvers Plains, and will finish late afternoon, probably around 5:00.  After the ride, you can catch the Orange Line (bikes are permitted all day on Saturday) at Malden or Wellington (about 2 miles).  Hybrid bikes recommended, but road bikes are OK. Helmets required. Steady rain cancels.
