Concerned About Crime On Southwest Corridor?

Written by Boston Biker on Nov 29

Got this in the email, I here every once in a while of a mugging on the south west corridor, this might be a good time to let your concerns be heard about this. Thanks for the heads up Ren.

Make your voice heard this Wednesday, December 1, 7:00 PM at the Boston Police Headquarters at 1 Schroeder Plaza on the corner of Ruggles and Tremont Streets, near Roxbury Crossing. Discuss public safety with police from the State, MBTA, and the three Boston Districts and find solutions.
This is the regular monthly meeting of the PMAC (Parkland Management Advisory Council).

It’s gotta be Wednesday, eh? I’ll be at Bikes Not Bombs – but I did want to mention that yesterday I saw a police officer riding a bike on the SWC just yesterday – which is good – except he was riding with no lights at night – not as good…

I’d like to see some bike patrols on the corridor, but unless more people use it, they won’t put the resources into patrolling it, which in turn keeps some people from using it… Huh.

Anyway, it doesn’t seem terribly dangerous to me.

I have actually seen some police bike patrols on that path at least once. I’ve never had any safety problems but I could see how some might be concerned about riding alone on a dark path. At some times (especially in winter), if you take a fall and get injured (or have a mechanical problem) it might take a while for someone else to ride by. Having a couple officers riding down and back would improve real and perceived security.
