This plan sounds good to me. That stretch is currently one of the worst places to bike in Boston, in my opinion, especially between the Hospital and Columbus. Cars tend to get REALLY fast and impatient there.

For a hoot, read the comments in the Globe story. Why does the word “bike” rile up a certain subsect? I love the group that demands bicycles be licensed, taxed, etc. How many of those people do you think showed up at the Tea Party circle jerk a few weeks back?

the Globe story (http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2010/05/boston_announce_1.html) says it’s only from Symphony to BMC. I thought they announced lanes from the bridge to BMC. much less useful if it doesn’t cover the stretch from Symphony to the bridge…

I think this is good news for cyclists in general, but the most annoying part of my commute is having to make a left turn off of Mass. Ave. This usually makes me the guy sitting in the left lane waiting with my arm out for a break in traffic, with a bunch of angry drivers behind me.
I think bike lanes might make this a little more difficult, because they reinforce the perception that I’m not supposed to be where the ‘real traffic’ is.

I just wish the lanes would extend beyond the hospital up to the start of mass ave, and even up both sides of columbia. There’s space for lanes there and I see TONS of bikers traveling that stretch and cars go even faster with traffic lights spread out pretty far.

@Jay what riles me up is those people fail to realize that cars also cause a lot more damage to the roads than bicycles and hence should be taxed more. If anything, cars aren’t taxed enough and licenses are too easy to get.

Jay, why go political? I don’t deny that many of those who have achieved victories for cyclists lean left, but there are also plenty of us free-marketers on two wheels…

Tea Party does not equal “free marketer”. If you think that you’re sadly misinformed.
