Where could I find that poster? Our bike plan is going before the assembly and it would be nice to whip that out so they could get a visual of how much cars actually contribute to traffic and how significantly bikes can reduce traffic. Great post.

You are correct, Mssr. Biker. Cars are killing us in a hundred different ways -- taking lives and our common wealth and our air and culture. Coddling drivers will not change a thing.

Hello Mtalinm:

I wasn't bashing cars, but rather pointing out the logical falsehoods in a certain mentality (namely the one that says bike clog up the streets and slow down traffic).

But now that you bring it up, what exactly have cars done that make them a positive force for this world? What is so great about the personal automobile that should insulate it from criticism?

You seem to put forth the idea that we have to bow down low and beg and plead for the powers that be to give us a little sip of the money that currently goes towards automobile infrastructure, why? What is is about cars, and driving cars that is better than walking, biking, or public transportation, especially in the city of Boston?

I don't know how helpful it is to bash cars. Does shaming drivers make them want to bike more?

What's most helpful I think is to increase the ease of year-round bike commuting. Emphasis on "year-round."

Currently, a bunch of bike paths including the minuteman don't get plowed much in the winter. I just bought some clipless pedals from a guy who bikes in from Bedford to Cambridge (16m) but has to hang up the cleats when the snow starts.

Also, a fresh coat of asphalt on the Charles River paths and the Southwest Corridor would be welcome.

Ha! We should have a reverse critical mass, where bikers just drive cars in. Hundreds and hundreds of cars that could have been bikes.
